Supplies
- Hobby Lobby, I Love This Yarn! Solids. 7 oz (199 g), 355 yds (325 m). 100% Acrylic. Worsted Weight Yarn [4]. Machine wash and dry.
- Crochet Hooks: 5 mm (H) and 5.5 mm (I)
- Finished Yardage: less than 175 yds in each color
- Scissors, Yarn Needle, Stitch Marker, ⅝” Button
Other yarns that work well: Caron Simply Soft, Bernat Premium or any other Worsted Weight Yarn will work.
Difficulty Level

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this project, just remember when you substitute the finished size of your project may also be different.
Finished Sizes
- Newborn: 5.5 inch hat height
- 0-3 months: 6.25 inch hat height
- 3-6 months: 6.75 inch hat height
Gauge
- Approximately 12 hdc and 10 rows in 4 inches
You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

- Newborn size is for babies less than 2 weeks old. Most new babies fit into the 0-3 months hat comfortably.

Newborn (13-13.5” head circumference)
Using your 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook:
R1: Mark as RS. With CA, ch 17, sk the first ch, 1 hdc in each remaining ch across, continue working ‘up and over’ by making 1 hdc in each ch on the opposite side of the starting ch, ch 1, turn. [32 hdc]
Working around the starting chain forms the top peak of the hat. All subsequent rows are worked in the same manner.
R2-R9: 1 hdc in each st across, ch 1, turn. [32 hdc]
R10: 1 hdc in each st across, finish off. [32 hdc]
R11: With RS facing, join CB with a sc (*see notes) to the last st of R10, 1 sc in each hdc across, ch 16, turn. [32 sc, 16 ch]
R12: Sk the first ch, 1 sc in each ch across, 1 sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn. [47 sc]
R13-R14: 1 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. [47 sc]
*OPTIONAL: Switch to a 5 mm (H) crochet hook for the final row, allowing the edge to gently frame the face.
R15: 1 sc in each sc across, 2 sc in the corner st, 1 sc in the end of each row end of the strap, finish off. [51 sc]

0-3 months (14-15” head circumference)
Using your 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook:

R12: Sk the first ch, 1 sc in each ch across, 1 sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn. [51 sc]
R13-R14: 1 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. [51 sc]
*OPTIONAL: Switch to a 5 mm (H) crochet hook for the final row, allowing the edge to gently frame the face.

R11: 1 hdc in each st across, finish off. [38 hdc]
R12: With RS facing, join CB with a sc (*see notes) to the last st of R10, 1 sc in each hdc across, ch 18, turn. [38 sc, 18 ch]
R13: Sk the first ch, 1 sc in each ch across, 1 sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn. [55 sc]
R14-R15: 1 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. [55 sc]

Finishing Instructions
- Sew button near the end of the chinstrap on RS. Slide button between stitches of R14 and R15 to fasten in a comfortable position.
- Weave in any remaining ends securely.
Other Suggestions
- Work stitches in back loops for a ribbed hat.
- Leave off the chinstrap and add braids or ribbons to the front corners for a bonnet.
- Work the entire hat in a solid color, or try variegated or self-striping yarns.
- Add a pom pom or tassel to the peak of the hat.
- Work the final row using fun fur for a fuzzy edging.
