Last week I received a request for a pattern to go with My Little Black Hat pattern so I decided to write up this simple cowl pattern you can make to go with your Little Black Hats. My Little Black Cowl Pattern
Scarf of the Month Club 2018 – January
You can easily customize this pattern – to any length and width. If you are working your project in rounds, like I did, simply chain a multiple of 2 stitches and then follow my instructions below. If you’d like it to be wider, just add additional repeat rounds (see R6-R24). If you would prefer to make this a fringed scarf, simply chain a multiple of 2+1 to the length you want your scarf to be. Leave a 5 to 6 inch tail of yarn at the beginning because it will become part of the fringe. Then work your scarf in rows, finishing off at the end of every row and leaving a 5-6 inch tail of yarn for the fringe on the other side before rejoining at the beginning again (leaving another 5-6 inch tail of yarn) and following the instructions as written. The project would need to be worked all on one side (RS – Right Side) of the scarf so you will not be turning at the end of the rows – this will ensure you get the same visual effect with the clusters lining up like in the photos below.

- Yarn: Red Heart: Creme de la Creme. 2.5oz / 70.9g and 125 yards. 100% Combed Cotton. [4] Medium Weight Yarn. Machine Wash Gentle. Color: Black – if this yarn is unavailable in your area, Bernat Handicrafter Cotton or Lily Sugar n’ Creme Yarn are suitable substitutes
- Hook: 5 mm (H) Furls Streamline (Ebony)
- Finished Project Yardage: 272 yards
- Scissors, Yarn Needle, Stitch Marker (optional)

32 inches circumference by 8 inches tall
Gauge
12 stitches in 4 inches; 13 rounds in 4 inches
You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size of your project will also be different.
Abbreviations
US Terminology used
bl – back loop
ch – chain
cl – cluster
R – round
rem – remaining
rep – repeat
sc – single crochet
sk – skip
st/sts – stitch/stitches
* – Repeat the instructions between the asterisks the number of times indicated. This repeat will contain of multiple instructions.
[] – at the end of the row – the total number of stitches
Special Stitches (photo tutorial at the very end of the post)
Cluster: *yarn over the hook, insert hook into the specified stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop**. Rep from * to ** one more time. Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on the hook to complete the cluster.

Notes
- Chain a multiple of 2+1 (for the starting chain) if you are working your project as a scarf in rows.
- If you are working your project in a different size in rounds, chain a multiple of 2 stitches.
- The cluster (cl) stitch is described in the Special Stitches section above. Please note there is no chain 1 following the last yarn over. This is atypical for cluster stitches – they usually have a chain 1 but for this pattern we are omitting the chain 1.
My Little Black Cowl Pattern Instructions
R1: Ch 100.
Without twisting the start chain row (putting it on a flat surface sometimes helps) line up the first chain of the row with the 100th chain to make a loop (cowl shape). Begin R2 in the first st as we will be working in continuous rounds from this point on. You may wish to put a stitch marker in the very first st after you work it so you remember where the beginning of the round is. You can move this marker at the beginning of every round.
R2: 1 sc in the bl of each ch around. [100]
R3: 1 sc in the bl of each st around. [100]
R4: 1 sc in the bl of each st around. [100]
Quick Tip: Do NOT ch-1 after you finish the cluster stitch. The cluster stitch (cl) is worked as follows: *yarn over the hook, insert hook into the specified stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop**. Rep from * to ** one more time. Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on the hook to complete the cluster.
R5: 1 sc in the first st, 1 cl in the next st. *1 sc in the next st, 1 cl in the next st**. Rep from * to ** all the way around. [50 sc, 50 cl]
Quick Tip: You will be working single crochet stitches in single crochet stitches AND cluster stitches in cluster stitches.
R6-R24: Rep R2. [50 sc, 50 cl]
R25: 1 sc in each st around. [100]
R26: 1 sc in the bl of each st around. [100]
R27: 1 sc in the bl of each st around. [100]

Round 5
Step 1: Single crochet in the first stitch.
Step 2: Yarn over the hook and insert the hook into the next stitch. Yarn over the hook.
Step 3: Pull up one loop. You now have 3 loops on your hook.
Step 4: Yarn over the hook and insert the hook into the same stitch. Yarn over.
Step 5: Pull up one loop. You now have 5 loops on your hook.
Step 6: Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on the hook.
Step 7: 1 single crochet in the next stitch.
