Hi Ann Marie, For the 3-5 year hat there should be 63 stitches and your gauge should be 3.5 stitches per inch.
This means, 63 stitches divided by 3.5 stitches in every inch, you will have a hat that is 18 inches in circumference (63/3.5=18).
This will fit an average 3-5 year old.
If you have 63 stitches and your finished hat measures 16 inches in circumference, this means you have almost 4 stitches in every inch (3.94 sts per inch) (63/16=3.94).
For the hat with 80 stitches and 21 inches this means your gauge is 3.8 stitches per inch (80/21=3.8).
I suggest based on the yarn and hook you are using and the the gauge of approximately 4 sts per inch, you make a hat with 72 stitches (72/4=18).
This will give you an 18 inch hat.
The difference in gauge could simply be due to the larger hook size you are using – it is a half size larger than the one I used in the pattern (4.5 mm ).
For the yarn and hook you have chosen to use, here is how I would make the hat.
R1: 10 hdc in a MR [10]
R2: 2 hdc in each st around [20]
R3: *2 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in the next st**. Rep from * to ** 10 times [30]
R4: *2 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts**. Rep from * to ** 10 times [40]
R5: *2 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts**. Rep from * to ** 10 times [50]
R6: *2 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 4 sts**. Rep from * to ** 10 times. [60]
R7: *2 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 5 sts**. Rep from * to ** 10 times. [70]
R8: *2 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 34 sts**. Rep from * to ** around. [72]
R9-24: 1 hdc in each st around. [72]
You may have to make a few more or less rounds in the hat as I am not sure what your row gauge worked out to.
I do recommend that you check your stitches per inch (gauge/tension) in a couple different rounds after the increases are complete (R9-R24) to be sure you are maintaining a consistent 4 stitches per inch. Sometimes when we no longer need to count our stitches we relax and our tension also relaxes, allowing for a looser crochet gauge.
I hope this helps,
Rhondda
I made the hat for ages 3-5 and it only came out 16 inches in diameter. I extended the next hat to 80 stitches around and it will be 21 inches in diameter. I used 3 weight yarn and a 5.0 hook. I went back over the pattern and can’t figure out why they’re coming out much smaller than indicated.
Hi AmieJ, No 🙂 You don’t need to chain at the beginning of the rounds – unless of course the pattern indicates to do so. I don’t normally have additional chains at the beginning of the round unless the stitch is taller than a half double crochet stitch. Hope this helps! Rhondda
Hi! I was wondering if you are supposed to chain at all at the beginning of each round?
Thank you!
Hi April, Magic Ring. MR is Magic Ring. I apologize for leaving this out of the abbreviations!! All the best, Rhondda
What does MR mean?
I think this kind of hat are always welcome in a family.
Thank you for share.
