  • Slip stitches do not count as stitches unless specified.
  • Chain stitches do not count as stitches unless specified.
  • Do not join, or ch additional stitches at the end of rounds unless it is indicated in the specific pattern line.
  • The finished dimensions by round are provided at the end of the post.
  • If you prefer not to use an invisible join method to finish off; feel free to use your regular joining method (i.e. sl st into the top of the next stitch, finish off and weave in the ends.) If you do choose to use this alternative joining method, please remember it will add extra stitches (i.e. slip stitches) to your design. I recommend you mark your slip stitch with a stitch marker of some kind to ensure you do not accidentally count it as a stitch and work into it. Using this method will also create a ‘seam’ line where you join and change the final appearance of your square.
  • Stitch counts have been provided at the end of each round. They do not include chain stitches or chain spaces unless specified.
  • Tutorial support has been provided in the Helpful Tutorial Section at the top of this post.
  • You may choose to save a PDF copy, or print a copy of this pattern for your personal use. This Print Friendly option is available at the end of the post and on the right sidebar of my site. If you do not wish for the photos to be included in your copy you may click on them in the Print Friendly preview screen and they will be removed from the copy you save.

15 Lest We Forget Square | Free Pattern | Oombawka Design CrochetNotes (specific to R6 only):

  • Read R6 completely before beginning. You are working into R4 here; not the round you just completed. 1 dc♦ remember to pick up the back bump from the first ch st in the corner of R5 and for 1 dc♥ remember to pick up the back bump of the 2nd ch st.
  • Be very careful not to miss the first sc after the corner. Remember the loop for the stitches will be to the RIGHT of the post of the stitch – you may need to slide the stitches worked into the ch1sp slightly to the right (if you are right handed; left if you are left handed) to expose the loop of the first sc.

R6: With Color B (red): Join with 1 hdc in any ch1sp from R4. (1 dc♦, ch 1, 1 dc♥, 1 hdc) in the ch1sp, 1 hdc in each of the next 10 sts. *(1 hdc, 1 dc♦, ch 1, 1 dc♥, 1 hdc) in the ch1sp; 1 hdc in each of the next 10 sts**. Rep from * to ** 2 more times. 1. I love this pattern. I plan to donate the afghan to the Northern Colorado Honor Flight this fall. Thank you for a lovely way to honor our veterans.

  2. Oh my what a beautiful pattern. I have many balls of black and red so off I will go.
Although black is a deadly colour for my eyesight I will do it.
Then maybe donate to the local legion to raffle for funds, tho I like the idea of giving to soldiers coming home in a wheelchair……
But before I blindly take off…Please Is the pattern US or UK stiches.

  3. I love this square. Nice to see some Canadian content LOL. I am from Georgetown, ON and I save my poppies and stick them on a picture frame for my brother-in-law which shows the co-ordinates for a lake named after him in Saskatchewan. A nice way to remember our heroes. I do lose some poppies but I just can’t seem to throw them out. I do buy a new one each year though. I am thinking of making a few of these to use as coasters and if I can make enough, sell them next year and donate the proceeds to the War Amps, or maybe some lapghans for our soldiers who come home in wheelchairs or something like this, if this is allowed.

  4. Hi Louann! Yes you can! When you select the Print Friendly option at the end of the post it will allow you to click on each item you want to remove from your copy so you only have what you want included 🙂 Then you can save it as a PDF or Print it 🙂 All the best, Rhondda
