Lemon Sherbet Sunhat Pattern in 11 Sizes

Here’s how it works.

Today I have a fun summer hat pattern to share with you. The Lemon Sherbet Sunhat is available in sizes preemie to adult large and is made with cotton yarn. The brim length is adjusted for the sizes to be proportional to the hat size. If you’d like an every wider brim, you can increase the width easily just by adding extra rounds of single crochet at the end of the pattern.

I was able to try Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton! Yarn (thanks Amy!) because a dear friend sent me some by mail. It is not available for purchase here in Canada. It is SO soft and beautiful to work with – I did find it fluffs a little bit with wear (the top of the hat is becoming a little bit fluffy looking) but it still looks really good. There are a wide-range of colors available in this brand of yarn too.

I was able to compare it for gauge (which is the main reason I wanted to try the yarn to be honest!) and it works up comparably to Red Heart Super Saver Yarn. The base of this hat pattern is the same as I use for my hats worked in the round for Red Heart Super Saver – so if you are not against using acrylic yarn for your sunhat you can easily substitute any of the Red Heart Super Saver yarn options – like their Ombre and Stripes!

  1. Hi Geraldine,

You work the Front Post Double Crochet in one stitch and then the back post double crochet in the stitch that follows. You do not work both in a single stitch.

    All the best,
    Rhondda

  2. I AM CONFUSED ABOUT THE DOUBLE FP AND BP WHEN I GO AROUND , DO I FP AND BP BOTH OF THE FP BP???? OR DO I DO THEM SEPERATE….

  3. Hi Katherine, I apologize, I copied and pasted from the next size up and didn’t change the final number or stitches in the brackets at the end. The written information is correct but the number of stitches should have remained 32. I’m on my way to update this. Thank you for letting me know!! Rhondda

  4. I am just a bit curious about the Preemie size hat how you go from 32 stitches in Round 3 to 38 stitches in Round 4 when you are just fpdc/bpdc around the stitches from the previous round?

  5. Hi Barbara, The gauge for the yarn you would like to substitute would need to be determined by you 🙂 I’m not sure if the yarn you would like to use would be a good replacement because I’m not sure what the weights and lengths are of the medium 4 acrylic you have are – they tend to vary in the 4 category quite a lot and many do not make good substitutes for cotton yarn (which is denser and less stretchy). Do you have the yards and oz? or grams and m of the kind of yarn you were going to use? The yarn I used was this gauge: 3 sts per inch 3.25 rounds per inch. This Yarn Sub site offers these possible suggestions for good substitutes: https://yarnsub.com/yarns/hobby_lobby/i_love_this_cotton_solids Hope this helps a little! All the best, Rhondda

  6. I just love your design of the lemon sherbet sunhat. There are a couple of questions to ask:1) I can not find cotton yarn medium 4 yarn, 100% cotton, 5 oz/180 yds. 2) Can I use 7oz acrylic medium 4 yarn and what would the gauge be.

  7. You must have been thinking of me when you designed this lovely hat! Lol I’ve been looking for a sun hat pattern, and this looks just like what I need! Thank you 😊
