Here’s how it works.
Crocheters, make sure to check out my new Lacy V Stitch Slouch Hat Pattern! It’s available in sizes toddler to adult large, so you can find the right fit for everyone in your family.
Made from the bottom-up with DK Weight Yarn [3] in one piece, this hat pairs perfectly with last week’s Lacy V Stitch Scarf.
You’ll need Light Weight Yarn [3] and a 4 mm (G) crochet hook for this project.
Sizes range from toddler to adult large, and you can easily customize the fit to make it a longer or shorter slouch. To increase the hat height by one inch, just work the repeat section two times. To remove an inch, decrease the repeat section by two rounds.

Disclaimer: The yarn used for this project was given to me by King Cole Yarns. If you’d like to try their yarns you can find your local King Cole Yarn Stockist here. Find all my free crochet patterns designed using King Cole Yarn here.
My Lacy V Stitch Slouch Hat Pattern is available in sizes Toddler, small child (3-5 years), child (6-10 years), teen/adult (small), adult (medium) and adult (large).
The Yarn I used
For my Lacy V Stitch Slouch Hat I used 2.4 oz (67 g) and 176 yds (161 m) of King Cole, Finesse Cotton Silk DK Yarn [3].
This exquisite natural fibre yarn is a blend of cotton (77%) and silk (23%). Each ball includes 50 g (1.76 oz) and 131 yds (120 m).
This finished hat is lightweight and very comfortable to wear. The lightness and feel of the cotton/silk blend make it perfect for warmer weather. The yarn has a slight twist that makes my simple stitches look intriguing and my finished hat looks like it was expensive to make (but it wasn’t!).
King Cole yarn is available from your local yarn shop, or online at the links in my post below.
Disclaimer: The yarn used to create this project was given to me by King Cole.
Finesse Cotton Silk is hand washable (30C) and it is available in 23 different shades. To see the shades available in Finesse Cotton Silk, visit this link.

Finished Size
This is a slouch hat. To make your hat more slouchy, increase the repeat rounds until you have a desired hat height.
The circumference listed is the hat body size. The hat band will be shorter but it will stretch to the size needed for the circumference because it is worked in a rib stitch.
- Toddler Hat (1-2 years) height 7.5 inches X 17 inches circumference
- Small Child Hat (3-5 years) height 8 inches X 18 inches circumference
- Child Hat (6-10 years) height 9 inches X 19 inches circumference
- Teen/Adult Hat height 10 inches X 20 inches circumference
- Adult Hat (Medium) height 11 inches X 21 inches circumference
- Adult Hat (Large) height 12 inches X 22 inches circumference
Gauge
- Hat Band: Approximately 6 hdc in 1 inch and 15 rows per 4 inches
- Hat Body: Approximately 6 v sts per 4 inches and 8 rows per 4 inches.
You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

Special Stitches
V Stitch (v st)
- Make (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in the specified stitch, or chain space.
Sl st Join for Hat Band
- Sl st into the center of the first ridge end.
Sl st Joins for Main Hat Rounds
- To join at the end of the hat body rounds, slip stitch into the third chain (from the initial ch 4) and then into the ch1sp. This will help center the starting v st for the next round and it will look closer to the other v sts that you are crocheting.
Helpful Tutorials
Notes:
- Stitch multiple of 2
- The initial ch 1 does not count as a stitch (HAT BAND).
- The initial ch 4 counts as 1 dc + ch 1. (HAT BODY).
- To join at the end of the hat body rounds, slip stitch into the third chain (from the initial ch 4) and then into the ch1sp. This will help center the starting v st for the next round and it will look closer to the other v sts that you are crocheting.
- Beg in Rnd 2, each v stitch is worked in the center of a v stitch (i.e. in the ch1sp). We skip all stitches not mentioned (ie. the v stitch double crochets found on each side of the ch1sp) and the 2 dc of each round.
- Sl st to join does not count as a stitch (HAT BODY).
- To add approximately 1 extra inch of hat height, work the REPEAT ROUND two extra times.

Finishing Instructions
- Finish off leaving a 8 to 10 inch tail of yarn.
- Close the top of the hat by weaving your yarn end through the front loop of each stitch in the last round (the dc and the chains) and cinching the top closed. See this tutorial for help.
- If there is still a gap at the top, don’t worry! Turn the hat inside out and close the gap by making a stitch from the left side of the gap to the right side (pull to tighten) then from the top of the gap to the bottom (pull to tighten). The fabric is lightweight so this doesn’t create a big bump at the top (like it would with bulky or worsted weight yarns).
- Weave in ends.
