Please note:

  • the initial ch 3 of each round counts as the first dc of the round
  • repeat the instructions in the (brackets) and/or [brackets] the number of times indicated after the closing bracket
  • you will be working in the spaces (not the stitches themselves)!

Abbreviations: R – round, MR – magic ring (see above tutorial for help!), ch – chain, st – stitch, sts – stitches, sl st – slip stitch, dc – double crochet, sk – skip, ch1sp – chain 1 space (i.e. the space created by the chain 1 in the previous round), ch2sp – chain 2 space (i.e. the space created by the chain 2 in the previous round)

Make 2 Motifs

R1: Make a MR,  ch 3, 1 dc, (ch 1, 2 dc) 5 times, ch 1, sl st to the top of the initial ch 3 to join. Finish off and weave in ends.

R2:  Join new colour with a sl st in any ch1sp, ch 3, 1 dc in the first ch1sp, ch 2; (2 dc, ch 2) in each ch1sp around, sl st to the top of the initial chain 3 to join. Finish off and weave in ends.

R3: Join new colour with a sl st in any ch2sp; ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 1 dc in the space between the next 2 dc sts, ch 1; [(3 dc, ch1) in the next ch2sp, 1 dc in the space between the next 2 dc sts, ch 1] around, sl st to the top of the  initial ch 3 to join. Finish off and weave in ends.

R4: Join new colour with a sl st in between the 1st and 2nd dc in one of the 3 dc st sets; ch 3, 1 dc in the sp between the 2nd dc and 3rd dc in the same 3 dc st set; (2 dc in the ch 1 sp), (2 dc in the next ch 1 sp), [1 dc between each of the next 2 dc sts in the next 3 dc st set, (2 dc in the ch 1 sp), (2 dc in the next ch 1 sp)] repeat around, sl st to the top of the ch 3 to join. Finish off and weave in ends.

R5: Join new colour with a sl st between any 2 dc sts; ch 3, 1 dc. Work 2 dc sts in the space between each of the dc sts around, sl st to the top of the ch 3 to join. Finish off and weave in ends.

Place wrong sides together (right sides facing out – i.e. the sides you want to show on the outside of the ornament) and join new colour of yarn with a slip stitch in the back loop of the top motif and the front loop of the bottom motif.

Work a slip stitch through bother layers of the motif around the motif, in the back loop only of the top motif and the front loop only of the bottom motif (Remember the loop names are based on their position to you!! see this tutorial for visual help on identifying the loops:  Stitch Anatomy), until you have joined 3/4s the way around. Slip the plastic ornament inside the partially closed ornament cover and continue to  sl st up to the very top of the ornament – by the metal cap and neck of the ball. Now sl st around the neckline of the ornament (think of it like a sweater) in the front loop (the loop closest to you) of each stitch to create a finished upper edge.
