Honk! Beep! Vroom! – Crochet Toys That Move is a great book for the Crocheter who is ready to move beyond just using their yarn and crochet hook to make a finished project.
This being said – it is also a GREAT book for anyone who would like to make a crochet car stuffie!
If you would like to make a toy for your child that is soft and huggable and which they can use their own imagination to move about – then the designs in this book will work equally well! In fact it will become infinitely simpler for you to achieve your finished vehicle because you will not need to worry about any of the wheel assembly instructions. Instead you need only attach the wheels permanently to the base of the vehicle.
If you want to make one of these unique crochet toys that move – which all children are sure to adore – there is a little bit more work involved. I think it is totally worth it – imagine the surprise on your child’s face when they realize their crochet toy can actually move around!
The instructions included in this book are extremely clear and well written – making the assembly and construction of the vehicles achievable.
There is a separate section at the end of the book called Wheel Assembly Instructions (p. 57) and not only does it walk you through assembling the axles and the axle positions (with very specific positioning measurements for each vehicle) it also outlines the exact Wood-Dowel Lengths you must have in order to assemble your chosen toy. Please note: You will need to cut your wood-dowels in order to assemble your finished toy. On the next page (p. 58) you will find the instructions for attaching the wheels.
On pages 59 – 61 you will find the Basic Crochet Instructions, as well as, tips for cutting the Plastic Canvas Inserts to fit in the bottom of your vehicle. These inserts provide a flat base for the wheels to be mounted to and enable your vehicle to move properly.
The vehicles were designed using Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in multiple colours and a 4 mm (G-6) crochet hook. Other materials you will need in order to make your toy that moves are stuffing, 7-mesh plastic canvas, hard plastic straws (1/2″ in diameter), wood dowels (3/4″ diameter and lengths varying based on the vehicle), a dremel or handsaw for cutting the dowels, and a hot glue gun and glue sticks. Some vehicles also need velcro, black felt, pipe cleaners and popsicle sticks.
If you instead want to make your child a soft car stuffie – you need your yarn, crochet hook, stuffing and for the dump truck some pipe cleaners and black felt.
Included in Honk! Beep! Vroom! Toys That Move are the following fun designs:
- Police Car
- Taxicab
- Ambulance
- Convertible
- Dump Truck
- VW Beetle
- School Bus
- Fire Truck

Wow, that is a really cool concept! I would never have thought to add axles to a crocheted vehicle. Maybe I’ll have to get my hands on this one.

Definitely worth looking at getting a copy of this book. Fantastic idea for little ones no hard edges, no scratches on walls and floors.
CHILDREN LOVE THESE! THEY MAKE GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFTS! I’VE ALWAYS LOVED SHOPPING AT MARTINGALES! THANKS FOR SHARING!
I’m going to start making some of these for my grandson! He’s 5 months old now, so by Christmas he should just about be old enough to start appreciating toys. (And I know his mom will appreciate no hard/sharp edges!)

I purchased this book because both of my boys love cars. I am currently working on the Firetruck and wow they are not small little stuffies! It’s going to be a very good sized truck and I know my son will love it. I plan to make several others when I have time. Thanks for reviewing the book! The review pushed my decision to make the Purchase. 🙂

I really like seeing things like these toys that are geared for boys. There are not a whole lot of crochet patterns
for the guys.
