I really want to be able to help Darla and Drew with their math if they have questions. It has been quite some time since I was in school and math was never one of my best subjects. Help Your Kids With Math, A Unique Step-by-Step Visual Guide is going to be my ‘go-to’ math help book over the next few years.
Darla starts grade 4 this year and last year was an eye-opener for me. Math is not being taught the way it used to be taught (back in the 80’s) and I was clueless on how I could help her when she was struggling last year. I searched online and found a lot of unhelpful information. I finally had to beg for help from her teacher. Her grade 3 teacher had to TEACH me how to help my daughter.
This year I am armed with a copy of Help Your Kids With Math and I am hoping it will guide me effectively through Grade 4. It is a visual step-by-step guide and it includes a lot of math and when I say a lot – I mean A LOT. I honestly have no idea what some of it is and the fact that I will likely need to know in the near future is unsettling. I loved school but I never ‘loved’ math. I just got through math by learning and applying formulas and memory work – I never understood it.
This book was created to help parents understand the ‘new’ math being taught in schools for students from grade 3 to grade 6. I was pretty surprised to see some of the math included in it because I did not learn anything about algebra until high school. I’m a little bit nervous to see what math I need to know once Darla hits high school!!
Thankfully this book includes the visual math she is learning and the written explanations I need to understand it.
Help Your Kids With Math includes the following sections:
- Numbers
- Geometry
- Trigonometry
- Algebra
- Statistics
- Probability
The Numbers Section introduces you to numbers and terms like: first number (1), even prime number (2), triangular number (3), composite number (4), prime number (5), perfect number (6), not the sum of squares (7), Fibonacci number (8), highest decimal (9) and base number (10). Definitions for each of these are provided.
The Numbers section walks you through:
- Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Prime Numbers, Units of Measurement, Telling Time,
- Roman Numerals, Positive and Negative Numbers, Powers and Roots, Surds,
- Standard Form, Decimals, Binary Numbers,
- Fractions, Ratio and Proportion, Percentages, Converting Fractions, Decimals and Percentages, Mental Math, Rounding Off, Using a Calculator, Personal Finance, and Business Finance.
Geometry includes:
- What is Geometry?
- Tools in Geometry.

The next section is Statistics. You will learn about Collecting and Organizing Data, Bar Graphs, Pie Charts, Line Graphs, Averages, Moving Averages, Measuring Spread, Histograms, and Scatter Diagrams.
The final section is Probability. Learn what probability is, the difference between Expectation and Reality, Combined Probabilities, Dependent Events, and Tree Diagrams.
The Reference Section at the end of the book includes extremely handy charts for:
- Mathematical signs and symbols
- Prime Numbers
- Multiplication Table
- Units of Measurement
- Conversion Tables (length, area, mass, volume and temperature)

I’m relieved to have found a tool I can use to guide me through the math my children will be learning. There is nothing worse than being totally lost when they need help with their homework. Help Your Kids with Math is a great book for parents and I think it will be a great book for my children to refer back to once they reach higher levels in school too.

I am so happy to have found this review. I am home schooling my 6th grader who, unfortunately, has trouble with math, and like you, I have not studied math in a very long time nor do I understand most of the new math. I will definitely be checking out this book in order to help my daughter in her studies. Thank you!
