This hand size chart for mittens and gloves includes common measurements for babies through to adults.

Depending on the yarn you are using and the thickness of the stitches you are crocheting, you may need to allow a little more (or less) room for the hand inside your mitten.

Also take note that some tightly crocheted fabrics do not stretch very well. You need to make sure that there is enough space inside the mitten for the fingers and the hand to be comfortable without any tightness. That extra tightness will actually cause those fingers to become cold, even with the mitten on.

For babies and for individuals who hold their hands in fists when they are relaxed, it may be more comfortable taking your hand circumference measurement around the fist. I did this for my Grandma’s Mittens. She does not really use her fingers when she wears her mittens, the mittens are used to keep her hands warm when she needs to leave her home. So for Grandma I was all about making the mittens comfortable to wear, which is why I even omitted the thumb. ♥

Note: The circumference is the measurement all the way around the hand.

If you have found a measurement online and it indicates that it is the width, remember you will need to multiply that measurement by 2 (to include both sides of the hand) PLUS you will need to allow for the depth of the hand because hands are not as flat as a piece of paper 😉 so you will want to allow for that extra depth, on both sides, in your overall measurement.

If you are searching for mitten patterns that are easy-to-put on for adults, children and babies, you may wish to try my Easy-On Mitten Patterns. I’ve designed these with an optional wrist-closure to allow you to open the cuff wider to slide hands inside before securing the mittens in place.

I hope that these crochet mitten size charts come in handy!

Hi Dhurga, The size chart includes measurements for the mittens and does not indicate any type(s) of yarn. The finished size for the mittens would be the same regardless of which type of yarn you are using 🙂 I hope this helps! Rhondda

    Hi
If I’m using different size yarn, how do I count the stitches. Please give an idea for adult mittens
    Thank you

This is a great resource. Could you make a graphic chart like this for foot sizes?
