Make these Granny Square Slippers with any yarn and hook!

  • Measure your foot length from longest toe to heel.
  • Divide this measurement by 2 to find the size granny square you need to make.

An example using Medium Worsted Weight Yarn

For these measurements I have calculated a 0.50 inch negative ease to the diagonal measurement to allow for stretch, and seaming.

Shoe and Granny Square Measurements

US SHOE SIZE
(children 8-12 years)
square diagonal measurement (inches)square diagonal measurement (cm)

US SHOE SIZE (women)square diagonal measurement (inches)square diagonal measurement (cm)
74.37511.11
84.511.43
94.6811.89

Foot measures approximately 9.5 inches long from toe to heel (Women’s US Shoe Size 9.5). This means you need to make granny squares that measure approximately 4.75 inches (12.38 cm) diagonally across.

When you make your granny square you may not need to work all 4 rounds to reach your finished diagonal measurement. For example, when I worked with Worsted Weight (Red Heart Super Saver) Yarn I met the following diagonal measurements using a 4 mm, 5 mm and 5.5 mm crochet hook.

Medium Weight Yarn [4]4 mm (G)5 mm (H)5.5 mm (I)
1 rounds1.47 inches(3.75 cm)1.57 inches (4 cm)1.67 inches (4.25 cm)
2 rounds2.75 inches (7 cm)2.95 inches (7.5 cm)3.34 inches (8.5 cm)
3 rounds4.17 inches (10.6 cm)4.37 inches (11.1 cm)4.6 inches (11.68 cm)

To make a size 9 slipper I used 3 rounds with a 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook and Red Heart Super Saver Yarn. This gave me a square with a diagonal measurement of 4.6 inches (11.68 cm). I did not do the final round of single crochet since I met my measurement by the end of Round 3.

When you make your squares aim for a measurement that is as close to the diagonal measurement as possible without going over the measurement. You can always add a single round of single crochet to reach the measurement if you need to. Or, you can make the squares using half double crochet stitches instead of double crochet stitches.

  • Make 14 granny squares (7 for each slipper).
  • Weave in ends.
  • Sew the squares together with a whipstitch as shown in the tutorial.
  • Add the ankle cuff to the slippers.
  • Finish off and weave in ends
