If you are looking for an easy and fun crochet hat pattern to make, my Get It Together Hat Pattern is just that! Crocheted with half double crochet stitches in the back bar of each stitch, this finished beanie resembles a knit stitch hat. It is simple and easy to crochet, so let’s get started!

Get It Together Hat Pattern

If you are new to crocheting, you can make this hat! It’s all about finding the correct place to put your crochet hook and knowing how to make a half double crochet stitch.

So, where do I put my hook? With your work facing you, find the top of the stitch (this is often referred to as the ‘v’ of the stitch). The loop that is closest to you is called the front loop and the loop that is further away from you is the back loop.

Stitch Anatomy. Remember the FL is always the Loop closest too YOU! Oombawka Design Crochet
Crochet Tip of the Week.

Now tip your project a little bit more so you can peek just behind and below that back loop. See that extra loop back there? That is the back bar of the stitch. All the half double crochet stitches for this hat are crocheted into that loop.

Back Bar Third Loop HDC Oombawka Design Crochet Tutorial

The back bar of the stitch is the loop that you will find directly behind and beneath the back loop of the half double crochet stitch.

How do I make a half double crochet stitch?

  1. Yarn over the hook and insert the hook into the specified stitch.
  2. Yarn over the hook and pull up 1 loop. You now have 3 loops on your hook.
  3. Yarn over the hook and draw through all three loops on the hook.

Notes:

  • Stitch multiple: 1 (Understanding Stitch Multiples)
  • The turning ch-1 does not count as a stitch.
  • The sl st does not count as a stitch.
  • Make your sl st tightly.
  • You may customize the hat height by working the repeat as many, or as few, times as you wish. Every 3 rounds you add with the stitch pattern, will add approximately 1 inch of height to the hat.
  • I use an invisible join to finish off my final round of stitches, you may substitute a sl st to join if you prefer.
  • I use a DMR (double magic ring) to begin my projects that are worked in the round. You may substitute a magic ring (magic circle), or a chain 3 and slip to form a ring.

  1. Hi Bindya, I apologize there is a mistake. I’m popping into the post to fix it right now.

Rnd 4 should have been: Rnd 4: *2 hdc in BB of the next hdc, 1 hdc in BB of each of next 2 hdc**. Work from * to ** around.  Sl st to the first hdc to join, ch 1. [32 hdc]

Then Rnd 5 works as written: Rnd 5: *2 hdc in BB of the next hdc, 1 hdc in BB of each of the next 3 hdc**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to the first hdc to join, ch 1. [40 hdc]

    I’m sorry for this mistake!!
    Best wishes, Rhondda

  2. Hello, I am working on 3-6 month hat but Rnd 5, is not adding up to 40 hdc. Can you please confirm if thats correct?

  3. Hi Susan, It was a typo. It should read [8 hdc]. I’m off to fix that. Thank you for letting me know! Rhondda

  4. At the start of the hat in all sizes you instruct 8 HDC into the DMR. The instruction indicates the round stitch count as 12. How is this possible? Am I missing something in interpreting the instructions?

  5. Hi Beth, I slip stitched to the normal 2 loops of the stitch (tightly) and then slid it to the right so I could work into the back bars of the stitch. It creates a more solid join with less holes when done this way. Hope this helps! Rhondda

  6. Great hat. I have a question. When you slip stitch at the end of the round of back-loop/back bar HDCs, do you slip stitch into the “normal” two loops of the stitch or slip stich into the 3rd loop or back bar? I don’t want to mess up the uniform texture, so I am asking before attempting this pattern. Thank you.

  7. First of all – I really LOVE that you put instructions for every size possible in your post. Thank you
Secondly- i’ve never seen a better explanation crochet stitch anatomy! (I’m trying to reach my daughters friend how to crochet- and your pictures are the easiest to understand. So, thank you for that as well
And last: I may not keep all of your patterns, but i know where where to go when i need a beautiful hat, scarf, neck warmer – any kind of apparel.
    Did I say “Thank you”???
