This free half double crochet hat pattern is available in sizes Preemie Baby to Adult Large. It is a basic crochet hat pattern with beginner friendly instructions. Make this hat with soft worsted weight yarn.

If you like checking your wraps per inch, this yarn gives approximately 10 wraps per inch. You can substitute similar weight yarn for these crochet hats and some great alternatives are: Caron Simply Soft, Lion Brand Yarns: Vanna’s Choice and Loops & Threads: Impeccable.

If you want to use a heavier weight Medium Weight Yarn, like Red Heart Super Saver, Red Heart With Love, or Bernat Super Value Yarns, I recommend you use the Free Half Double Crochet Beanie pattern instead. It is designed to be used with Worsted Weight Yarn and is crocheted with a 5.50 mm (I) hook. You will find my Simple Double Crochet Hat that uses double crochet stitches (dc), a 5.50 mm (I) hook and heavier Medium Weight Yarn here

Half Double Crochet Hat Pattern in Sizes Preemie to Adult Large

This hat is crocheted in continuous rounds/spirals, so you do not need to slip stitch to join, or to chain-1 at the end of each round. You can use a stitch marker (safety pin, bobby pin, bit of scrap yarn, twist tie, etc. ) to mark the first (or last) stitch of the round and move the stitch marker up each round as you progress, to mark your place.

There is no seam in this hat – it is neat and tidy.

If you prefer using the slip stitch (sl st) to join and ch-1 (or 2) and working in regular rounds you still can.- Just try to keep those slip stitches (sl st) small and tight.  The slip stitches and chains will add a seam line to the hat and can make the hat a little bit larger.

No time to make this hat right now? No problem, PIN it for later!

Gauge

Approximately 14 sts per 4 inches and 12 rows worked in pattern per 4 inches

TIP: Please check your gauge as it is easy to allow your stitches to become more relaxed as you crochet the ‘repeat’ rounds.

Pattern Notes:

  • I use a DMR (double magic ring) to begin my projects that are worked in the round. You may substitute a magic ring (magic circle), or a chain 3 and slip to form a ring, if you prefer.
  • You may customize the height of this basic beginner hat by working more, or less repeat rows
  • If you crochet tight slip stitches, omit the final decorative round of slip stitches. You can work one round of single crochet (sc) in place of the last row, in the back loop only (blo).

Remember, there are TWO Versions of this pattern; for 2 different hat lengths. If you are making these as chemo caps you will want to crochet the longer hat length; Version 1. This will allow the hat to reach the base of the hairline.

If you want a shorter half double crochet hat instead, please follow the instructions for Version 2 below. This hat is designed to fit to mid-ear.

  1. I can’t wait to get moving on this, thanks for sharing the pattern!

I’m no expert and am sure I’m missing something that is fairly obvious, but I can’t seem to figure how many yards I’d need to make version 2, adult medium hat?

    🙂

  2. Hi 🙂 I was told that the best fibers for chemo caps are breathable, natural fibers like cotton. The yarn needs to be very soft because the scalp can be very sensitive. I hope this helps! Rhondda

  3. Hi Pat, It can – you would just need to increase the rounds that worked evenly (without the extra stitches being added). For men’s hat’s I usually make my hat height about 12 to 13 inches (depending on how slouchy you want it!). This hat is worked from the bottom up but it is also a slouch hat (just a different style) just in case you want to take a look https://oombawkadesigncrochet.com/simple-double-crochet-slouch-hat-sizes-preemie-adult-free-pattern/ Have a lovely week, Rhondda

  4. Can this be made into a slouchy hat for a man. If so can you tell me how to do this.

  5. I just wanted to say I am so happy I found your page! I tried a couple patterns before coming across yours and they all were coming out too small.. yours are perfect! 🙂 I made the 12-24 month hat for my 2 year old.. I made it a slouch by adding half an inch to the end. It came out great!

  6. Hi Roxann, 🙂 Yes most of my hats work well for chemo caps – I do recommend you choose the longer option (base of earlobe) in the design you pick because from what the Crochet for Cancer site recommends is a hairline length cap. I think most of my designs include the longer option but if you find one that doesn’t please message me and I will adjust the height for you in the instructions. Best, Rhondda

  7. Hi Roxann 🙂 Yes, this pattern is great for chemo caps. I recommend using Version 1 (which is the longer length hat so it reaches beneath the ears and covers the hairline) and omit the final round of slip stitches. You want the edging to be comfortable and not restricting at all. Let me know if you have any other questions 🙂 It is very kind of you to crochet and donate hats. All the best, Rhondda

  8. Also wondering if your double crochet hat will work for chemo hats? Thanks again 🙂
