This month Carol Hegar from Shady Lane Original Crochet Designs has donated 2 copies of her newly released Football Afghan Crochet ePattern to be given away! This afghan will make a terrific gift for Football Fans!

I received a copy of this pattern to review from Shady Lane Original Crochet Designs. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Title: Football Afghan Crochet Pattern
Author: Carol Hegar

Football Afghan Crochet Pattern Review

This gorgeous Football Afghan Crochet Pattern is available in 3 different sizes! You can crochet the Baby Size (39 inches X 45 7/8 inches), the Child Size (43 1/3 inches X 50 7/8 inches) or the Adult Size (48 inches X 57 1/4 inches).

Although the finished afghan appears complex, it is actually crocheted using the mosaic dropped double crochet technique where you only ever work with one color of yarn at a time, for each row! A determined beginner will be able to make this project.

This afghan also includes Carol’s original Pocket Boarder option for those who prefer blankets without fringe.

Page 2 of the pattern includes the abbreviations used in the pattern and important information about how the stitches will be worked. There is also a helpful video if you are a visual learner.  Instructions include a written pattern (US Crochet Terms) plus an optional graph for those who prefer to work from that.

Yarn and Hook

Baby Size: DK Weight/Baby Weight/Sport Weight Yarn and a 3.50 mm (E) hook

Child Size: DK Weight/Baby Weight/Sport Weight Yarn and a 3.75 mm (F) hook

Adult Size: Medium Weight Yarn/Worsted Weight Yarn and a 4 mm (G) hook

Easy to Learn Crochet Technique

The Football Afghan is much easier to crochet than you would think and with Carol’s helpful step-by-step video tutorial you will be able to master the technique easily.
.
The Football Afghan Crochet Pattern is crocheted with an easy-to-learn method where you work with only one color of yarn at a time, using a dropped double crochet stitch technique. The effect is similar to Mosaic Knitting but it’s crochet! This is the same technique that was used years ago when making the Navajo Afghans (Trail of Tears Afghans) that were so very popular.
.
Instead of trying to juggle more than one color of yarn at a time for each row you work, this technique allows you to crochet your stitches into the remaining front loop of a stitch 2 rows prior and add a different color simply!
.
All the color changes take place at the beginning of the rows so this means you are only working with a single color of yarn at a time.
.
Only simple stitches are used to make this afghan, so I feel a determined beginner would be able to master the pattern. You will only need to understand where to find the front loops and back loops of your stitches, single crochet, double crochet and slip stitches.  I love how easy this technique makes it to crochet mosaic designs.
..

I know the contest is closed but I just had to comment on this beautiful pattern. Many years ago I made a Tunisian crochet footbal field afghan for my late father in law. The color changes in the middle of the row and for just a few stitches and all the woven in ends had me in tears. To say the least. The afghan turned out besutifully, but, I believe it could have been so much more of a positi very e experience had it been written by someone such as this designer. Things do get better with time. 😁

Football Afghan is really cool, but I also like the Textured Tiles Afghan and all the Native American patterns.

I love the football afghan in three different sizes, but I have to say I’m in love with the Peek-a-Boo Bear afghan! I love the concept on how to make these.
