Here’s how it works.
This easy to crochet Flower Box Afghan Square can be made in only a few hours with Medium Weight / Worsted Weight Yarn [4] and a 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook.
This pretty flower granny square was designed as part of the 2023 BAMCAL.
I have included round by round photos for this afghan block. You can absolutely use more colors when crocheting your square, or leave it more minimalistic and use just one or two colors.
Sometimes we don’t want a heavy afghan square for our blanket and that is why I’ve designed this one to be lighter than most of my other granny squares.
If you prefer a more solid afghan block you can try one of my other free square patterns. See my other free crochet afghan square patterns here.

Notes:
- I use a DMR (double magic ring) to begin my projects that are worked in the round. You may substitute a magic ring (magic circle), or a chain 3 and slip stitch to form a ring, if you prefer. Visit this post to see other options for working in rounds.
- Initial ch 3 counts as 1 dc.
- Sl st to the first stitch of each round to join when “Sl st to join” is indicated.
- Pattern does not have a turning chain for each round with a color change because I usually start each new color change round with a standing st. If you prefer a sl st join and a turning chain, feel free to substitute. How to make a standing single crochet stitch.
- Sk all stitches not mentioned.
- When we sl st over to a stitch or space we may be working into those sl sts as stitches to complete the round. You may want to make them in a relaxed tension/gauge. Work last sl st into the stitch or space you are working over to.
- Sl st do not count as stitches unless specified.
- White (MC) and Sage (CC).
