First French Dictionary

The First French Dictionary includes more than 2000 words from a variety of topics that children will find interesting. This book is available as an eBook and as a Hardback beginning March 20, 2018.

It is important to read the Pronunciation Guide on page 113 before you begin to work with your children on the words and common phrases in the book. It will explain how the words are pronounced and where the emphasis is placed on the syllables in the words.

At the beginning of the book you will find Topic Pages which include many words about a specific topic. Each English word includes a photograph, the correct French pronunciation for the word and the correct French spelling of the word.

Useful Phrases are included to help your children practice speaking with friends in sentences. Common phrases like “I don’t know”, “Excuse Me”, “Can You Help Me” and “How are you?” are included along with the days of the week, months of the year and numbers up to 100.

The Verbs section begins on page 114 and includes many useful verbs in the infinitive form. The most commonly used verbs, like “to be” ad “to have” are written out in a more expanded form to include the variations of the verb when combined with I, You, He/She, We or They. This helps show how the verb changes based on who is performing the action.

This is Darla’s and Drew’s First French Dictionary and because they are enjoying learning French in school (they start in Grade 1 here) they love the book. They like to pick out new words to go and say to their teacher and friends and I love that each word includes the pronunciation so I can try to help them when they ask.

The First French Dictionary is a great first visual reference book for children. It is also a helpful guide for me as a Mom because it includes guidance and tips for proper pronunciation and using verbs based on who is performing the action. The common phrases are also a great way to practice speaking French with my children at home.
