Construction and Assembly
For Each Mitten
With Right Sides (RS) facing inward, place 2 granny squares atop one another. Seam the one side edge together (whipstitching works well here). I joined in the second ch in a corner ch2sp, then whipstitched up the edge to the first ch in the next corner ch2sp. Finish off and weave in ends.
Sew the opposite side edge together beginning at the bottom corner and up the side edge. I joined in the second ch in a corner ch2sp, and whipstitched in the next (3 dc, ch1) (3 dc, ch 1). Then I skipped the next (3 dc, ch 1) carrying the yarn loosely along the one side of the fabric. The skipped section creates the thumb hole. Whipstitch the rest of the side closed (the next 3 dc, ch 1). Finish off and weave in ends.
Flip the seamed mitts RS out and proceed to the Adding the Cuff instructions below.
Adding the Cuff
Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook, or size required for gauge and Color B:
TIP: Be sure the thumbholes you created are closer to the edge where you are adding the cuff!
Rnd 1: Sc evenly around the bottom edge of the mitt. Sl st to the first st to join. [36 sc] (*you can have more sts here but be sure each mitt has the same number and it is an even number).
Do not finish off.
TIP: Do you prefer a longer cuff, or one that you can fold-over? Simply increase the starting chain count in R1 (below) until you have the cuff length you’d prefer for your mitts!
The next section is added directly into Rnd 1 of the cuff.
R1: Ch 7, sk the first ch, 1 sc in each ch back to the mitt, 1 sl st in each of the next 2 sc of Rnd 1 of the cuff. Ch 1, turn. [6 sc]
R2: Sk the 2 sl sts. 1 sc in the bl of each sc across. Ch 1, turn. [6 sc]
R3: 1 sc in the bl of each sc across back to the mitt, 1 sl st in each of the next 2 sc of Rnd 1 of the cuff. Ch 1, turn. [6 sc]
R4-R35: Rep R2 and R3.
R36: Rep R2.
To join the cuff, sl st through the bl of each st of R36 and the rem loop from the foundation row in R1. Finish off and weave in ends.
Repeat instructions for the second mitten.
Finishing The Top Edge of the Mitts
Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook, or size required for gauge and Color B:
Rnd 1: Sc evenly around the top edge of the mitt. Sl st to the first st to join. [36 sc] (*you can have more sts here but be sure each mitt has the same number of stitches).
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st around. Sl st to the first st to join. [36 sc]
Repeat instructions for the second mitt.
The Thumbhole Edging
Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook, or size required for gauge and Color B:
Rnd 1: Sc evenly around the thumbhole opening. Sl st to the first st to join. [12 sc] (*you can have more sts here but be sure each thumbhole has the same number of stitches).
Repeat instructions for the second mitt.
Finishing Instructions
- Weave in any remaining ends.

Crocheters Often Ask
You will need four squares total — two for each mitt.
Yes. You can use any Aran or Medium Weight Yarn [4]. Just check make sure your granny squares measure 4 inches X 4 inches square before you add the edging and cuff.
No. You can start with a chain 4 ring. Both options work well.
To make the cuff tighter, decrease the number of stitches you work in Rnd 1 of Adding the Cuff. Make sure both mitts have the same stitch count in the cuff round.
