Social media is a powerful tool – let’s use it together to get these charitable organizations the support they need!

Please read on to learn more about Warm Up America and how we can help.

If you are unable to help personally, please share this with your friends online – you never know – you may reach someone who is able to make a difference locally! If you would like to contribute too, we encourage you to crochet the featured free pattern this month and donate it to important cause near and dear to you.  ♥ Rhondda

Warm Up America

Warm Up America has been distributing handmade blankets and more to those in need since it was founded in 1991 in Wisconsin. Warm Up America accepts 7” x 9” knit or crochet blanket squares; finished blankets in baby, child, and adult sizes; adult hats and scarves; and baby clothing year round. These can be mailed to their headquarters (listed on the Get Involved page) at any time, or distributed in your local community. They also have special campaigns (some with specific deadlines or a different mailing address) from time to time that may include an opportunity to crochet or knit other items. You can find out more about those campaigns in the Current Needs page of their website.

One of my favorite things about Warm Up America is how they encourage children and teens to get involved with volunteerism. You can read their tips for involving your own children or grandchildren (or a youth group) in Warm Up America activities on the Kids page.

Blanket blocks should be made with medium weight (also known as worsted, aran, or #4 weight) acrylic yarn because these are the most washable and can be easily combined with blocks made by other crocheters and knitters. Warm Up America also accepts items made with washable wool, but asks that you label 7” x 9” washable wool blocks so they can be assembled into blankets with other wool blocks.

If you’d like to contribute locally to save on shipping or to make a bigger impact in your community, read these Assembly Tips and get Made with Love labels to attach to your finished projects here.

Try the Piggyback Stitch Block to get started making your first 7” x 9” block for Warm Up America! It’s a great way to use up scraps while helping a worthy cause.
