When I work into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. You can work under the back loop only if you prefer.
To make this scarf longer, chain more stitches using the stitch multiple.
To increase the width of the cowl, work more rows using the repeat section of the pattern.
Extra photos are provided at the end of the pattern.
This cozy scarf project is crocheted lengthwise in rows.
Using your 6 mm (J) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):
R1: RS: Ch 162, sk the first 3 chs (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each rem ch across. Turn. [160 dc]

Edging Instructions
R1: RS: Ch 1, rotate your work to crochet across the side edge of the scarf. Make 11 sc across, ch 1 and sl st to the base of the first ch of R1. Finish off.
With the RS of your project facing, rejoin your working yarn with a sl st into the base of the last ch of R1.
R2: RS: Ch 1, rotate your work to crochet across the side edge of the scarf. Make 11 sc evenly across, ch 1 and sl st to the top of the first st worked in R11. Finish off.
Next week I will be releasing the pattern for a matching One-Skein Ombre Brimmed Hat, so stay tuned!
You can use any yarn and hook to make this cozy scarf project!
With the yarn and hook you’ve chosen for the project, chain until you reach the length you’d like for your scarf (shawl, or blanket); or chain until your length measures 56 inches. Make sure the number of chains you have can be divided by 2 evenly.
Follow the pattern as written.
Continue crocheting until your project is the width you would like it to be, or until it measures approximately 5 inches height. If you’d like it to be wider, work additional repeat rows (R2 and R3).
Whether you’re looking for a quick gift or a cozy accessory, this ombre scarf pattern is sure to become one of your favorite easy crochet scarves. Stay tuned for next week’s matching brimmed hat pattern! Don’t forget to share your completed projects – I’d love to see how your cozy scarf turns out!
