Exquisite Gift Hat Crochet Pattern

When you purchase through links on my site, I may earn an affiliate commission.
Here’s how it works.

The Exquisite Gift Hat is an easy-to-crochet project that is made from the bottom-up, in one-piece. The pattern features beginner crochet stitches such as chains (ch), half double crochet (hdc) and double crochet (dc). The stitch pattern creates a lovely, soft and lacy fabric. Along with the matching scarf pattern, you can make a fantastic handmade gift set.

For help on any of these stitches or techniques you can refer to the tutorials included in my free online crochet stitch guide.

Exquisite Gift Hat Crochet Pattern

This project is crocheted from the band, up to the top of the hat.

Adult Exquisite Gift Hat Band Pattern

  • The hat band is crocheted in turned rows.
  • Band width approximately 1 inch X 18 inches length.

Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

R1: Ch 6, sk 1 ch, 1 sc in each rem ch across, ch 1, turn. [5 sc]

R2-R79: 1 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. [5 sc]

Bring the edges of R1 and R79 together and line up the stitches. Crochet R80 through these aligned loops to create a seam. You may alternately whipstitch this band together at the end of the pattern with your initial yarn end and skip to the main hat pattern (without finishing off) now.

R80: 1 sl st through each aligned st of R79 and R1. [5 sl st]

Do not finish off, proceed to the Main Hat Pattern below.

Adult Exquisite Main Hat Pattern

  • The main hat is crocheted directly into the hat band, in joined and turned rounds.

Using your 4.5 mm crochet hook (or size required for gauge) and working across the row ends of the hat band:

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 hdc and ch 1), sk the next row end. *1 hdc in the next row end, ch 1, sk the next row end**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to join. Turn. [40 hdc, 40 ch1sp]

Rnd 2: RS: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in the first ch1sp. *2 dc in the ch1sp, sk the next hdc**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to join. Turn. [80 dc]

Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 hdc and ch 1), sk the next dc. *1 hdc in the bl of the next dc, ch 1, sk the next dc**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to join. Turn. [40 hdc, 40 ch1sp]

Rnd 4-Rnd 23: Rep Rnd 2 and Rnd 3

Rnd 24: Rep Rnd 2

Proceed to finishing instructions.

Finishing Instructions
  • Finish off leaving a 8 to 10 inch tail of yarn.
  • Close the top of the hat by weaving your yarn end through the front loop of each stitch in the last round (the dc and the chains) and cinching the top closed. See this tutorial for help.
  • If there is still a gap at the top, don’t worry! Turn the hat inside out and close the gap by making a stitch from the left side of the gap to the right side (pull to tighten) then from the top of the gap to the bottom (pull to tighten). The fabric is lightweight so this doesn’t create a big bump at the top (like it would with bulky or worsted weight yarns).
  • Weave in ends.
