The Evergreen Mist Hat combines rich tonal color with soft, puff-filled texture in an easy top-down design. Crocheted with Mary Maxim Tonal Hues yarn in Liquid Mercury using a 5 mm (H) crochet hook, this pattern features a 2-round stitch repeat worked in one piece.

The silvery-green tones shift beautifully through each round, creating a subtle gradient that gives this hat its signature look. With multiple sizes from baby to adult, it’s a great project for gifting, matching sets, or keeping cozy through the season.

Soft texture, puff stitches, and tonal shades make this one-piece crochet hat a cozy favorite to stitch and wear.

The free written pattern is available in my post below, or if you prefer, you can purchase the ad-free PDF crochet pattern from my shop.

For help on any of these stitches or techniques you can refer to the tutorials included in my free online crochet stitch guide.

The Yarn

Bag-O-Day Tonal Hues Yarn

I visited my local Mary Maxim store in Paris and instantly fell in love with the Tonal Hues yarns. I’ve always loved yarns that shift shades within a single color — they make it so easy to create eye-catching projects without having to plan color changes. Crocheting with Bag-O-Day Tonal Hues was such a pleasure, and I hope Mary Maxim keeps this beautiful yarn line around for a long time!

Notes:

  • You may substitute your favorite method for starting in rounds for the DMR (double magic ring) if you prefer.
  • Ch 3 counts as 1 dc.
  • Turning chains (ch 1) do NOT count as stitches and we do not work into them.
  • Sl st to the top of the first st of the round to join (this will either be the top of a chain 3 – which is counting as a dc, or the first sc of the round).
  • You can make your slip stitches tightly as we will not be working into them.
  • If you’d like to increase the hat height, work more repeat rounds.

Crocheters Often Ask

Is the hat worked in one piece?

Yes! The hat is crocheted seamlessly from the top down using puff and double crochet stitches.

Can I adjust the length?

Absolutely — simply add or remove repeat rows before the final rounds to create a beanie or slouchy fit.

What type of yarn works best?

Medium Weight (4) yarns with tonal or solid shades work beautifully to highlight the texture and stitches.
