Crochet Kaleidoscope Review

Browse through 100 different crochet motifs and learn how to choose your yarn colors effectively with Crochet Kaleidoscope by Sandra Eng.

In the Color Guide you will learn about different color combinations that work well together. We find out how we can pair colors by including neutrals and different complementary and/or split complementary color combinations. Available online color selection tools are mentioned and we are given some color ‘hacks’ we can try, to help us, if we find making color choices difficult.

Consideration is also given to how many colors to use in a single project and which order to use the colors we have chosen.

Sandra Eng also recommends some tools we can use to visually see how our motifs will look if we were to combine them into a completed project, like a blanket. This helps us visualize how different colors used in different sections of the motif can change the overall finished appearance of our projects.

Each pattern motif includes the following information:

  • Finished size
  • Hook size
  • Gauge
  • Yarn colors for the original colorway used
  • Notes
  • Stitch Diagram
  • Written instructions in U.S. Crochet Terms
  • Alternate Colorway (including yarn colors)

The motifs sections are:

You can totally change the finished look of your project simply by selecting different color combinations for the motifs.

The Stitch Key for the diagrams is included on page 150. I personally love that the Stitch Diagrams have been included because it gives you a visual representation of what the finished project will look like better than written instructions can. There is a bit of a learning curve when switching from written instructions to stitch diagrams but they are becoming my preference for crochet instructions. If you have always relied on written instructions, try to take a look at the diagrams as you are working each round so you see how they are being arranged. It may help you visualize and choose your colors for future patterns.

The Glossary is included on page 151 and includes written explanations of the different terms used in the book. You are also provided with a link to the free glossary of terms on the Interweave website for further assistance.

Filled with stunning color combinations and design elements the motifs included in Crochet Kaleidoscope can be combined to create a wide-range of unique projects. The helpful color guide shows us how to make effective yarn color choices and demonstrates how the order of the yarn colors can impact our finished projects. I am totally in love with Crochet Kaleidoscope by Sandra Eng.

Based on your review, some of these designs are really enticing. I’ve never cared much for making squares because of all the sewing but if I learn the JAYG way, I just might have to start doing squares again.

Thx for this review. Learning how to do color work , learning how to match and choose colors and create designs is a great tool to have in our crochet and craft toolbook in general. Learning how they work together or against each other makes us all better designers when we are creating our masterpieces. Love all the pics you shared. Love colors!

I need to get this book! I tend to get into a rut when choosing colors. (Neutrals, mostly! Lol.) I’m never sure if the colors that I’m using look good & if I have enough, too many, or too little! (And does that contrasting color look good, or is it too obnoxious?) Add in the motif patterns & help with how they’ll look together & this book sounds like a must-have for me! It’s going to the very top of my list!

  27. Julie Clemens says
