This month for our Crochet Along, I am sharing my Elegant Crochet Hat Pattern. This pretty crochet hat pattern features pretty puff stitches worked in sections.

To make my Elegant Crochet Hat you will need DK Weight Yarn [3] (also known as Light Weight Yarn) and a 4 mm (G) crochet hook.

Supplies

  • Yarn: King Cole Cotton Top DK (check your local yarn shop here). Find it online here. (affiliate link) 3.52 oz (100 g) and 284 yds (260 m). 78% Premium Acrylic and 22% Cotton. DK Weight Yarn [3]. Machine wash (gentle; 30 degrees) and tumble dry (low).
  • Colors: 3 skeins Blue (4218)
  • Crochet Hook: 4 mm (G) Furls Polaris Streamline Galaxy (affiliate link)
  • Finished Project: Adult Medium Hat 2.7 oz (77 g) and 218 yds (200 m)
  • Scissors, Tapestry Needle (yarn needle), Stitch Marker (optional)

Finished Sizes

These hats are designed to fit between mid-ear and the base of the earlobe. If you would like your hat to be longer, simply work more repeat rounds. Hats will stretch approximately 3 to 4 inches in circumference when worn.

  • Small Child (age 3-5 years) height 7 inches X 16.5 inches circumference
  • Child Hat (age 6-10 years) height 7.5 inches X 17.5 inches circumference
  • Teen Hat height 8 inches X 18 inches circumference
  • Adult Hat (Medium) height 8.5 inches X 19 inches circumference
  • Adult Hat (Large) height 8.5 inches X 20.5 inches circumference

Gauge

Hat Body

Approximately 4 half double crochet per 1 inch and 4 rows* per 1 inch.

*Rnd 1 – Rnd 4*

Hat Band

Approximately 4 rows per inch and 4 hdc-slst per inch.

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

Special Stitches

Half Double Crochet Slip Stitch (Abbreviated: hdc-slst)

Yo, insert hook in specified st, yo and pull up 1 loop and pull the same loop through the 2 loops on your hook.

Puff Stitch (Abbreviated: puff st)

*Yo, insert hook in specified st, yo and pull up 1 loop* (3 loops on the hook). Rep from * to ** 2 more times (7 loops on the hook). Yo and pull through 6 loops on the hook. (2 loops rem on the hook). Yo and pull through the rem 2 loops on the hook. Push the puff st through to the RS of your work.

Notes:

  • Stitch multiple: 2
  • The initial ch-1, ch-2 and ch-3 do not count as stitches.
  • The back bar is the loop immediately behind and below the back loop of the hdc stitch. It is also called the 3rd loop.
  • The slip stitch (sl st) to join does not count as a stitch and we do not work into it. Make your slip stitch to join tightly.
  • I close the top of my hat using my simple closing method.

Elegant Crochet Hat Pattern

This project is crocheted from the bottom-up in one-piece. We begin by making the hat band, which is worked in rows. Then we begin the hat body in joined rounds to the crown of the hat. 

Small Child (3-5 years) Elegant Crochet Hat

Using your 4 mm (G) hook (or size required for gauge):

Hat Band

R1: Ch 8, sk the first ch, 1 hdc-slst in each rem ch across. Ch 1, turn. [7 hdc-slst]

R2-R66: 1 hdc-slst in the bl of each of the next 6 sts, 1 hdc-slst in the last st. Ch 1, turn. [7 hdc-slst]

Bring the edges of R1 and R66 together. Working through the rem loop of the foundation ch and the bl of the corresponding st in R66, 1 sl st in each st across. [7 sl st]

Do not finish off. Proceed to the Main Hat instructions below.

Main Hat 

Rnd 1: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), 1 hdc in each row end around. Sl st to the first hdc to join. [66 hdc]
