[/disclaimer]

Would you like a free pattern for an Easy Winter Cap? I hope you do! Here it is in sizes preemie to adult large. This simple cap is worked in rounds from the top down and then finished in rows in one solid piece. Quick to crochet, excellent as gifts and donation projects this cap is made with medium weight yarn. The edging on the hat covers the ears and is fitted and slightly shorter around the nape of the neck. This hat style is a modern interpretation of the traditional earflap hat. Optional ties can be added and instructions have been included.

If you would prefer a traditional ear flap hat please see this post for my free pattern using the same yarn and hook! Easy Double Crochet Earflap Hat

the above image was my prototype design and I did not initially have the post stitches at the back – I changed the pattern to include them along the center section instead – as in Darla’s hat image below

Easy Winter Cap - ODC

Notes

  • do not count the sl st as a stitch
  • do not count the ch 3 at the beginning of a round as a stitch
  • the first st of each round is worked in the same st as you sl st to join
  • These hats are based on maths so if you have the correct number of stitches and are crocheting to the gauge specified you will always have the exact size hat I have specified below. For example: Child has 60 sts. 60 sts divided by 3 stitches per inch is 20 inches circumference. If you need a different size, simple use this same method to determine how many stitches you need to end with – then be sure you add or subtract a stitch to reach this total during the increase rounds at the beginning of the hat 🙂 email me if you have questions.

  1. I’m trying to find a pattern for a slouchy hat using size 7yarn. I haven’t seen one anywhere. Would you happen to have a pattern for one. If you do, I would gladly pay you for one. Thank you in advance.
