Simple Crochet Pillow Oombawka Design (Instagram Post)

I designed my Easy Crochet Pillow Pattern as part of the Cozy at Home CAL. The free written pattern is available in my post below.

The Cozy at Home CAL is crochet along that takes place every year with #CALCentralCrochet. This year it is taking place from January 8th to March 11th. Along with 10 cozy crochet patterns (that you get for free!) you’ll also have a chance to win prizes in our end of CAL giveaway! Learn more about the Cozy at Home CAL here.

For this CAL we were tasked in designing something that you could use in your home decor. I thought this year I’d make something simple that anyone with even beginner crochet skills could master without much difficulty.

This Easy Crochet Pillow pattern features the Griddle Stitch, or as some newer crocheters may know it, the Lemon Peel Stitch.

I have included instructions to make this in any yarn and hook you wish at the end of the post. For those of you who will be using Medium Weight Yarn / Worsted Weight Yarn I have also included instructions to make the pillow in additional sizes (check out the Finished Sizes section for the starting chain count and number of rows you need to work).

I hope you enjoy making this Easy Crochet Pillow pattern. It is a fun way to add a bit of color to any room and such a simple project you may even want to make a few to pile up on the couch!

Notes:

  • Stitch multiple of 2 + 1 for the turning chain
  • Reversible
  • Ch 1 to turn does not count as a stitch and we do not work into it.
  • When I work into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. You can work under the back loop only if you prefer.
  • The pattern is written to make a 12 inch X 12 inch pillow. To make another size use the information provided in the Finished Sizes Section above.

Easy Crochet Pillow Pattern

This project is crocheted widthwise in rows.

Make 2 squares (12 inches X 12 inches each)

Using your 6 mm (J) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

R1: Ch 33, sk the first ch. *1 sc in the next ch, 1 dc in the next ch**. Work from * to ** across. Ch 1, turn. [16 sc, 16 dc]

R2-R28: 1 sc in the first st, 1 dc in the next st. *1 sc in the next st, 1 dc in the next st**. Work from * to ** across. Ch 1, turn. [16 sc, 16 dc]

Proceed to finishing instructions.

Finishing Instructions:

TIP: When working along the side edges, pick up 1 loop from each edge to whipstitch through. When working along the top and bottom edges, work beneath both the front and back loops on each edge.

Easy Crochet Pillow Assembly
  • Finish off and leave a long tail for seaming and assembling the pillow.
  • Place the squares on top of each other, lining up the 4 sides.
  • Thread the yarn tail onto a yarn needle.
  • Working through both layers, whipstitch the side edges together on one side, then whipstitch across the bottom of the squares and up then up the second side edge. Stop before you seam the top edge.
  • Place the pillow in the case and then whipstitch the top of the case closed.
  • Finish off and weave in any remaining ends on the inside of the pillow.

How to Make this Project With Any Yarn and Hook

  1. Chain until you reach the size width you want for your pillow and chain an additional 2 inches of chain stitches.
  2. Work Row 1 of the pattern as written until your piece reaches the width you need. Make sure you finish with a double crochet stitch for the row.
  3. Undo the extra chain stitches up to the chain beside the double crochet. Pull to tighten that last chain (it becomes the slip knot on the end of the row). View this tutorial for help!
  4. Follow the pattern as written until your square measures the height you need for your pillow.
  5. Follow the finishing instructions for the pillow.
