Double Stranded Single Crochet Hat

double stranded sc hat pattern

I took these photos outside and it was snowing! In case you were wondering what the white ‘flakes’ on the hat were 🙂

Sizes: Preemie to Adult Large

Yarn: Red Heart with Love 2 strands held together
Hook: 8.00 mm (L)
Gauge: 2 sts / inch and 2.75 rounds / inch

Abbreviations: R – round, sc – single crochet, st – stitch, sts – stitches

Please note: These hats are worked in continuous rounds (spirals). You do not need to slip stitch to join at the end of the round; instead use a stitch marker to mark your place.

VERY IMPORTANT!! This single crochet hat pattern is for use with 2 strands of worsted weight yarn held together!!

Hi Deanna, Yes! Thank you for noticing this! It should say repeat 2 times not 5 times. I’ve updated the pattern. Thank you so much for letting me know! All the best, Rhondda

Hi there. Is there a mistake in the Newborn size? Round 5 would get you30 stitches the way it is written which is not much different from 0-3 months. Just want to make sure I am reading it right. Thanks!

Hi Sara, an easy way to add earflaps to the hat is to take the total number of stitches in the final round of the hat and divide it by 3. Then leave that number of stitches between each earflap for the front and back and use the remaining stitches for the earflaps. So if the total was 60 stitches you would have 60 divided by 3 which is 20 stitches. You would leave 20 stitches at the front and 20 at the back and then make each earflap 10 stitches wide at the top where it touches the hat. The earflaps would be worked back and forth in rows and you would decrease either 1 stitch every row or 2 stitches every other row – depending on the shape you want to make and how long you want them to be. You can either stop when you have 3 stitches left or continue to make a pointed tip. Hope this helps a bit, Rhondda

How would you put earflaps on this hat?

Hi Beth, I have not tried this using a single strand of bulky yarn. Only 2 strands of Red Heart with Love held together. You could try this version – it is for my ski hat but it does use bulky yarn and if you stop the pattern where the eye section (skipped stitches) begin it will be a hat which will reach the top of the ear. If you want it to reach the base of the ear I would recommend adding 2 additional rows of the repeat. Hope this helps! Rhondda https://oombawkadesigncrochet.com/warm-winter-ski-masks/

Have you made this pattern using a single strand bulky yarn? My husband wants a hat & picked out a bulky yarn & I can’t find a pattern using that weight of yarn. Thanks for your help!!
