Welcome! Today I am releasing a brand new 12 inch afghan square pattern. This square has been tested and tech edited for your crocheting pleasure 😉 The Don’t Blink Afghan Square is crocheted using simple stitches (double crochet stitches and single crochet stitches) and looks amazing in different color combinations.

The ad-free PDF includes a chart for those who prefer crocheting from charts. You can get the Don’t Blink Square PDF from Ravelry here.

Special Stitches

Dropped double crochet (drdc): A double crochet stitch worked into the unworked front loop of a stitch located directly below and 2 rounds before.

The stitch will be worked in the front loop of the stitch immediately below the next stitch in the current row. The stitch on the current row will not be worked into, this is indicated in the instructions.

The double crochet stitch is worked as a regular dc stitch: Yarn over, insert the hook under the front loop of the specified stitch, yarn over and pull up 1 loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through last 2 loops.

Notes:

Beginning in R2 all single crochet stitches are worked in the back loop only.

All double crochet stitches are worked in the front loop only, in the stitch immediately below the next st of the round, but made 2 rounds prior.

We will be working into the corner chain stitches (NOT the chain spaces), under the back loop only.

Color A: Pewter; Color B: Stone

OR

Color A: Platinum; Color B: Stone

Pattern is written with a ch 4, sl st to form a ring to begin. I prefer to use a double magic ring to begin, as it is more secure. Either is acceptable for this pattern.

Pattern is written with a sl st join at the end of each round. I prefer to use an invisible join instead because it is tidier. Either is acceptable for this pattern up to the last round.

Pattern does not have a turning chain for each round because I usually start each new round with a standing st. If you prefer a sl st join and a turning chain, feel free to substitute.

  1. Hi Terri, I use the same stitch in this square and I filmed a video tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2JizCCGSpA&feature=youtu.be A dropped double crochet is a double crochet stitch being worked into a stitch from a previous row or round. So it wouldn’t be worked into the same stitch it normally falls in in your current round. Instead it would be worked in the round before the round you are crocheting. So if you are working on say Round 6, normally you make your stitches into Round 5. For the dropped double crochet you are working into the stitch in Round 4 instead. That is why we left those front loops available on the previous rounds. To give you somewhere to place that dropped double crochet stitch.

    Hope this helps,
    Rhondda

  2. I have never heard of a dropped double crochet stitch. Do you have a video on how to do this? Love the square, but don’t know that particular stitch. Thank you.
