Simple Flower Afghan Square Design
Note: You can alternately do an invisible join wherever a sl st to join is indicated.
Abbreviations: R: round, sc – single crochet, sl st – slip stitch, dc – double crochet, 2 dc cluster – two double crochet cluster stitch, ch – chain, st – stitch, sts – stitches, hdc – half double crochet, 4 dc cluster – four double crochet cluster stitch
2 dc cluster: yarn over the hook, insert your hook into the next st, pull up 1 loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on your hook, yarn over the hook and insert the hook into the same stitch, yarn over and pull up 1 loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through the remaining 3 loops on your hook
3 dc cluster: yarn over the hook, insert your hook into the next st, pull up 1 loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on your hook, [yarn over the hook and insert the hook into the same stitch, yarn over and pull up 1 loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on your hook] 2 times, yarn over and pull through the remaining 4 loops on your hook
4 dc cluster: yarn over the hook, insert your hook into the next st, pull up 1 loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on your hook, [yarn over the hook and insert the hook into the same stitch, yarn over and pull up 1 loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on your hook] 3 times, yarn over and pull through the remaining 5 loops on your hook
R1: adjustable ring, 6 sc, sl st to join
R2: Continue in the same colour of yarn: (ch 2, 1 dc, ch 1, 2 dc cluster, ch 1) in the first st, [(2dc cluster, ch 1, 2 dc cluster, ch 1) in the next st] 5 times, sl st to join, finish off and weave in ends
R3: Join new colour with a slip stitch in any ch 1 space, ch 2, hdc in the same space, ch 1, (2 hdc, ch 1) in each remaining ch 1 space around, sl st to the first hdc of the round to join, finish off and weave in ends
R4: Join new colour with a slip stitch in any ch 1 space, ch 2, 3 dc cluster, ch 3, [(4 dc cluster) ch 3] in each remaining ch 1 space around, sl st to the first 2 dc cluster to join, finish off and weave in ends
R5: Join new colour with a sc in any ch 3 space, sc 5 more times in the same space; 4 sc in the next ch 3 space, 4 sc in the next ch 3 space [6 sc in the next ch 3 space, (4 sc in the next ch 3 space) 2 times] 3 times (do not sl st to join or ch 1)
R6: Continue working in the same colour: 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, (2 sc in each of the next 2 sts), 1 sc in each of the next 12 sts, [(2 sc in each of the next 2 sts), 1 sc in each of the next 12 sts] 2 times, (2 sc in each of the next 2 sts), 1 sc in each of the next 10 sts, sl st to the 1st sc of the round to join, finish off and weave in ends
R7 Find the 2 sts where you crocheted 2 sc in each st, in Round 6. Find the 1st st with the 2 sc stitches. Attach your new yarn in the 2nd sc; with a sc join. Crochet 1 more sc in the same st, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 14 sts, [2 sc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 14 sts] 3 times (do not sl st to join or ch 1)
R8 Continue working in the same colour: 1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 16 sts, [(2 sc in each of the next 2 sts), 1 sc in each of the next 16 sts] two times, 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 15 sts, sl st to join and finish off and weave in ends.

I think after blocking it would be fine – I didn’t block mine before I took photos – good to know that by turning though it might not need blocking? Thanks Jan!
Maybe not so”wonky” if you turn every other border row? Tried that on a large square and looks just fine
