Made from the bottom-up in one piece, with Light Weight Yarn [3] this hat pairs perfectly with last week’s Crossing the Gap Scarf. Featuring beginner friendly crochet stitches (double crochet and crossed double crochet) in an easy to remember 2 row repeat this project is as comfortable to crochet as it is to wear!

You’ll need DK Weight Yarn [3] and a 3.5 mm (E) and 4 mm (G) crochet hook for this project.

Sizes range from toddler to adult large, and you can easily customize the fit to make it a longer or shorter slouch. To increase the hat height by one inch, just work the repeat section two extra times. To remove an inch, decrease the repeat section by two rounds.

Disclaimer: The yarn used for this project was given to me by King Cole Yarns. If you’d like to try their yarns you can find your local King Cole Yarn Stockist here. Find all my free crochet patterns designed using King Cole Yarn here.

My Crossing the Gap Hat is available in sizes Toddler, small child (3-5 years), child (6-10 years), teen/adult (small), adult (medium) and adult (large).

The Yarn I used

To make my Crossing the Gap Hat, I used King Cole, Finesse Cotton Silk DK Yarn [3].

This beautiful natural fibre yarn is a blend of cotton (77%) and silk (23%). Each ball includes 50 g (1.76 oz) and 131 yds (120 m).

This finished hat is lightweight and very comfortable to wear. The lightness and feel of the cotton/silk blend make it perfect for warmer weather. The yarn has a slight twist that makes my simple stitches look intriguing and my finished hat looks like it was expensive to make (but it wasn’t!).

Finished Size

This is a slouch hat. To make your hat more slouchy, increase the repeat rounds until you have a desired hat height. For every 2 rounds (approximately) worked you will increase the hat height by 1 inch.

The circumference listed is the hat body size. The hat band will be shorter but it will stretch to the size needed for the circumference because it is worked in a rib stitch.

  • Toddler Hat (1-2 years) height 7.5 inches X 17 inches circumference
  • Small Child Hat (3-5 years) height 8 inches X 18 inches circumference
  • Child Hat (6-10 years) height 9 inches X 19 inches circumference
  • Teen/Adult Hat height 10 inches X 20 inches circumference
  • Adult Hat (Medium) height 11 inches X 21 inches circumference
  • Adult Hat (Large) height 12 inches X 22 inches circumference

Gauge

  • Hat Band: Approximately 6 hdc in 1 inch and 4 rows per 1 inch using a 3.5 mm crochet hook.
  • Hat Body: Approximately 16 sts per 4 inches and 9 rows per 4 inches using a 4 mm crochet hook.

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

Finishing Instructions

  • Finish off leaving a 8 to 10 inch tail of yarn.
  • Close the top of the hat by weaving your yarn end through the front loop of each stitch in the last round (the dc and the chains) and cinching the top closed. See this tutorial for help.
  • If there is still a gap at the top, don’t worry! Turn the hat inside out and close the gap by making a stitch from the left side of the gap to the right side (pull to tighten) then from the top of the gap to the bottom (pull to tighten). The fabric is lightweight so this doesn’t create a big bump at the top (like it would with bulky or worsted weight yarns).
  • Weave in ends.
