Crochet Yarn Talk –  Red Heart Super Saver Ombré Yarn Review

Last week I received a package from Red Heart filled with Yummy Yarn! Last week I shared with you 2 free crochet patterns I designed with my Super Saver Stripes Yarn. If you missed it, you can read my Crochet Yarn Talk Review HERE and get the free patterns for all 11 sizes of the Double Crossed Hat HERE and the Tropical Breeze Wrap Pattern HERE. I also received 2 BIG balls of Red Heart Super Saver Ombré Yarn.

This weekend, if you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen a sneak peek for today’s Scarf of the Month Club free pattern. I was crocheting it out on the back deck and enjoying some lovely sunshine at the time. I designed the pattern for the Ocean Breeze Scarf using 1 ball of the Red Heart Super Saver Ombré Yarn. The color I received is called True Blue and as you crochet with pretty yarn it transitions between different shades of blue. Here’s the finished project:

The Ocean Breeze Scarf will be available later today on my blog.

The Red Heart Super Saver Ombré Yarn is available in 12 bright colors.

From left to right in the top row are: Anemone, Anthracite, Baja Blue, Cocoa, Deep Teal and Jazzy.

Super Saver Ombré Red Heart

From left to right in the bottom row are: Purple, Scuba, Sea Coral, Spearmint, True Blue and Violet.

I personally love the color I was sent (True Blue) and would also like to get my hands on Anemone and Anthracite. I’m thinking I may even be persuaded to design and crochet a blanket using one of those colorways!

The Super Saver Ombré Yarn is a 100% Acrylic [4] Medium Weight yarn. It is available in large balls of 10 oz / 283 g ; 482 yds / 440 m and does have specific dye lots. So if you are working on a large project be sure to buy enough yarn in your dye lot to finish the project. This yarn is Machine Washable on a Gentle Cycle and Tumble Dryable on a Low setting and because it is acrylic please remember not to use an iron.  This product is proudly Made in the USA.

The colors are spectacular – ranging from a deep sapphire blue to pale stonewashed blue jean blue shade – all in a single ball. There is quite a bit of depth to the color too – it isn’t flat but has a bit of a shine to it. I am pretty impressed with this yarn – from the color, softness, quality and because in the entire ball (all 482 yds) I did not come across even one tied end, or knot! I pulled the center yarn end out of the ball and worked the whole project.

Truth Time: After working with this yarn I’ve realized something – Red Heart Super Saver is much softer than I remember it being. I have crocheted with Super Saver yarn in the past and I have always liked to use it for projects like my Amigurumi, slippers and mittens because it is super durable and long lasting yarn. It doesn’t pile or lose stitch definition with wear and it is affordable and easy to find in most of the shops I buy my yarn from. The Red Heart Super Saver Yarns I received this past week are softer – not super soft and prone to piling and fluffing but soft enough that I don’t mind having the finished scarf wrapped around my bare neck…and I have pretty sensitive skin. I recommend giving it a try to see if you think it feels softer too 🙂

If you would like to purchase this yarn for yourself, it is available on the Red Heart website: Super Saver Ombré Yarn

  1. Thank you for your honest review. I’ve used RHSS a lot but I’m finding that different colors are thicker (or thinner) than others making it quite noticeable in projects. I love the look of Ombre yarn but never buy it because I always feel like I don’t know what to make with it and don’t want it to just sit on my shelf. I think I need to find a pattern first, then buy the yarn because Red Heart’s Ombre’s are really pretty.

  2. I bought some at Walmart and it’s very pretty, but scratchy. Hoping that it gets softer with washing.

  3. I love Red Heart yarn but I had never tired the Ombre. I don’t see it to much in stores but I’m going to look for it. I like the colors it has. Thank you for your review.

  4. Hi Robin, The first link is for the hat pattern (the one that says: “all 11 sizes of the Double Crossed Hat HERE”) the 2nd link (in the same sentence) is for the wrap (the one that says: Tropical Breeze Wrap Pattern HERE). I double checked and both are linking to the right posts 🙂 Hope this helps, Rhondda

  5. I will have to check out this yarn, Thank you for your review

  6. I have been seeing all of the beautiful RHSS Ombre yarn colors and can not wait to get my hands on some and see what I can do with it!! Thank you for all of the help you give us by reviewing so many products.

  7. This is gorgeous yarn with a great feel. I’m eager to work now with it

  8. I’ve seen other pictures of this yarn but your design truly shows the way the colors change. I’m really wanting to try it in the Anemone also.

  9. So wish we’d get the new red heart yarns up here! Love to try them!!

  10. I want to try this yarn, love the yarns that change colors while you crochet or knit.

  11. Like you the Super Saver was rougher than it is today. I just purchased a skein of black and noticed that it is softer than the older yarn in my stash.

  12. When I started crocheting earlier this year, the Red Heart Super Saver yarn that I picked out was pretty soft. Then I started reading forums and blogs that eviscerated the yarn. I love it. I use it for most of my projects. The price is right, and the color selection is amazing!

  13. I love this yarn and the color. I have all the Ombre colors, and have worked with the True Blue. I loved how the color changes were gradual and smooth. It may be my new fav from Red Heart.

  14. Ooo good to know that it’s gotten a bit softer! I found it hard on my hands when I first started crocheting.
