Yarn and Hook Used
This post will show the poncho using Red Heart Soft and a 6.0 mm (J) hook. Colours used are as follows:
Row 1-5: Berry
Row 6-9: Off White
Row 10-15: Grape
Row 16-23: Off White
Row 24-29: Teal
Row 30-33: Off White
Row 34-37: Berry
Option 1: Worsted Weight (Red Heart Soft) – 6.0 mm (J). Instructions are for Child Size 6.
Option 2: DK Weight (Knit Picks Gloss) – 5.0 mm (H). Instructions are for Child Size 4.
Abbreviations
US Terminology used
ch – chain
r – row
dc – double crochet
sk – skip
sl st – slip stitch
st/sts – stitch/stitches
X-dc – crossed double crochet st
* – Repeat the instructions between the asterisks the number of times indicated. This repeat will contain of multiple instructions.
() – Repeat the instructions between the parentheses the number of times indicated.
(Option 1 Stitch Count, Option 2 Stitch Count) – end of row stitch counts
Special Stitches:
Crossed Double Crochet Stitch (X-dc): this stitch is worked over 2 sts: skip the next st, 1 dc in the next st, now go back to the skipped st and work 1 dc – this creates an “X” or, a Crossed Double Crochet Stitch.

How to Change Colours on the Last Yarn Over of a Stitch
Note: The total number of stitches at the end of each row does not include chain stitches unless specified.
Note: the ch 3 at the end of R33 counts as the first dc of R34
R34: (count ch 3 as 1 dc), sk the first st, X-dc (see special stitches above) across to the last st, work 1 dc in the last st, ch 1, turn (34, 44)
R35: (count ch 1 as 1 sc), sk the 1st st, 1 sc in each st across, remember to work 1 sc in the turning chain at the end of the row, ch 3, turn (34, 44)
R36: (count ch 3 as 1 dc), sk the first st, X-dc across to the last st, work 1 dc in the last st, ch 1, turn (34, 44)
R37: (count ch 1 as 1 sc), sk the 1st st, 1 sc in each st across, remember to work 1 sc in the turning chain at the end of the row, changing color on the last yarn over of the last st, ch 2 (count as sc and ch 1), turn (34, 44)
