For this month’s Washcloth of the Month Club project I used 1 ball of Big Value Recycled Dishcloth Cotton and a 4 mm (G) crochet hook. This yarn was sent to me King Cole Yarn. This yarn is a blend of 85% Cotton and 15% Polyester. Each 100 g ball contains approximately 175 yards (160 meters).
The washcloth pattern below is written to make a 7.5 X 7.5 inch project, but you can make your project to any size you wish with the stitch multiple I have included in the pattern.
The photo tutorial for the Crochet Star Stitch Washcloth is included at the end of the post.

First Star Stitch of a Row (initial star st)
Pull up 1 loop in the FL of the second ch from the hook, pull up 1 loop in the BL of the same ch, pull up 1 loop in each of the next 3 hdc. There will be 6 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops. Ch 1.
Star Stitch (star st)
Each star stitch is created by working into loops from the previous star stitch you have just crocheted.
The ch1sp created at the end of the last star stitch is also known as the ‘eye of the stitch’ and it is into this space that we begin our next star stitch.
Pull up 1 loop in the eye of the stitch, pull up 1 loop in the last leg of the last star stitch, pull up 1 loop in the same st as the last leg of the last star stitch, pull up 1 loop in each of the next 2 hdc. There will be 6 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops. Ch 1.
The ch-1 worked as part of the star stitch is also called the ‘eye of the stitch’
When I work into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. You can work under the back loop only if you prefer.
The initial ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
The initial ch 2 counts as 1 hdc.
To make this washcloth longer, work more rows.
To make this washcloth wider, chain more stitches using the stitch multiple.
Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):
R1: RS: Ch 35, sk the first ch. Pull up 1 loop in each of the next 5 chs (you have 6 loops on your hook), yarn over and pull through all 6 loops, ch 1 (first star stitch made). *Pull up 1 loop in the ch1sp you just made, pull up 1 loop in the last leg of the star st you just made, pull up 1 loop in the same ch as the last leg of last star st you just made, pull up 1 loop in each of the next 2 chs (you have 6 loops on your hook), yarn over and pull through all 6 loops, ch 1.** Work from * to ** across to the last ch of the row. 1 hdc in the last ch. Turn. [1 hdc, 15 star st]
R2: Ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc), 2 hdc in each ch1sp (eye of the stitch) across. 1 hdc in the skipped first ch from R1. [32 hdc]
R3: Ch 2, initial star st (see special stitches). Make star sts (see special stitches) across to the last hdc of the row. 1 hdc in the last hdc. Turn. [2 hdc, 15 star st]
R4: Ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc), 2 hdc in each ch1sp (eye of the stitch) across to the last hdc. 1 hdc in the last hdc. Turn. [2 hdc, 15 star st]
R5-R18: Rep R3 and R4
Note: the stitches for this next row are worked under the front-most loop and the front loop. There is a photo included in the tutorial at the end of the post if you need assistance locating these loops.
I hope you enjoy making this Crochet Star Stitch Washcloth. It’s a wonderful way to practice a new stitch and create something useful at the same time.
Happy crocheting!

How to Crochet the Star Stitch Washcloth with Any Yarn and Hook
You can make your project to any size you wish with the stitch multiple. Simply chain a number of chains that you can divide evenly by 2, then chain 1 extra chain. Follow the instructions below.

Turn.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc), 2 hdc in each ch1sp (eye of the stitch) across. 1 hdc in the skipped first ch from R1.
Row 3: Ch 2, initial star st (see special stitches). Make star sts (see special stitches) across to the last hdc of the row. 1 hdc in the last hdc. Turn.
Row 4: Ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc), 2 hdc in each ch1sp (eye of the stitch) across to the last hdc. 1 hdc in the last hdc. Turn.
Rep Row 3 and Row 4 until you reach the size you want for your washcloth.
Note: the stitches for this row are worked under the front-most loop and the front loop. There is a photo included in the tutorial that was located before this section if you need assistance locating these loops.
