This crochet scarf size chart includes common scarf measurements for children and adults.

Crochet scarves are fun to make because you can usually pick any stitch pattern and then easily modify it to the yarn and hook you want to use. You can worry a little bit less about gauge.

It is important to mention though that you will want to be sure the yarn and hook you choose to use will create a soft enough fabric to allow the scarf to be worn comfortably. Especially if the scarf is meant to be wrapped. If the fabric is too stiff (tightly crocheted) it will not bend very well, or be comfortable to wear.

These scarf measurements are meant to be used as a starting point for you. Like everything handmade you can customize and add (or decrease) width and length for your own design purposes.

3 Important Things to Remember About Scarf Lengths

  1. Small children should be supervised when wearing scarves. I do not recommend scarves for children under the age of 4 years. I would suggest making them a short stretchy cowl, or a ski mask hat that covers the neck and can be tucked into their coat.
  2. Avoid crocheting, or gifting long scarves for children (or people with mobility issues) because they can cause some safety issues. For example, they can become tangled, or caught up on branches, or other objects. They can also be a tripping hazard.
  3. If you are making a longer scarf, remember the longer the scarf the heavier it will become. Super scarves made with Super Bulky Wool are beautiful but they can weigh a lot – which makes them less practical than a Super Scarf crocheted with lighter weight yarn.

Wider Scarves

Extra wide widths for adults range in width between 10 to 12 inches. The extra wide widths are usually crocheted for shorter length scarves that are seamed to form an infinity scarf; or light weight scarves that can be wrapped multiple times (when the fabric is light weight and has a lot of movement).

Standard Scarf Measurements

Adults

Small: 6 to 8 inches wide X 40 inches long
Regular: 6 to 8 inches wide X 60 inches long
Long: 6 to 8 inches wide X 70 inches long
Super Long (aka Super Scarf): 6 to 8 inches wide X 120 inches long (or longer)

Children (age 4-5)

Small: 3 to 3.5 inches wide X 36 inches long
Regular: 4 to 4.5 inches wide X 40 inches long

Children (age 6-10)

Small: 4 to 4.5 inches wide X 50 inches long
Regular: 5 to 6 inches wide X 55 inches long
Long: 5 to 5.5 inches wide X 60 inches long

Traditional Methods for Determining Scarf Lengths

One traditional technique that was used to determine how long to make a scarf is to ask the person who you are making it for to hold their arms out to either side of their body and then measure the distance from the fingertip of the left-hand, to the fingertip of the right-hand.

I tested this out with my children and myself. My measurement is 62-inches, my 10-year old daughter’s measurement is 54-inches and my 8-year old son’s measurement is 54-inches.

Another traditional way to determine a measurement for scarf length is to go by the height of the person. Make the scarf as long as they are tall.

I tested this out with my children and myself. My measurement is 63-inches, my 10-year old daughter’s measurement is 53-inches and my 8-year old son’s measurement is 51-inches.

Traditional Methods for Determining Scarf Length and Scarf Width

These methods will work for all ages and sizes of people.

Traditional Methods for Determining Scarf Widths

Measure the distance from the tip of your your ‘baby finger’ to the tip of your thumb, across the palm of your hand, with your fingers spread wide (but not over-stretched). This is called your hand-span.

I tested this out with my children and myself. My measurement is 7-inches, my 10-year old daughter’s measurement is 6-inches and my 8-year old son’s measurement is 6.5-inches.
