Crochet Picket Fence Afghan ePattern

The Crochet Picket Fence Afghan ePattern can be crocheted in 3 different sizes simply by changing the yarn and the hook you use with the pattern.

This design features an outdoor scene with a picket fence, butterflies, bunny rabbits, flowers, clouds, flying boards and a shining sun.

Adult, Child and Baby Sizes

Adult | 60 inches X 47 inches | 4 mm (G) hook | Medium Weight Yarn [4]
Child | 53.5 inches X 41.75 inches | 3.75 mm (F) hook |Sport Weight Yarn [2]
Baby | 48 inches X 37.5 inches | 3.50 mm (E) hook | Baby Weight Yarn [3]

The pattern is written in US Crochet Terms. Optional graphs are provided on pages 9 and 10, for those who prefer working from graphs. Abbreviations used and special instructions are included on page 2. The information you need to work from the graphs is included at the bottom of page 8.

This afghan pattern is crocheted with just single, double and double crochet bobble stitches.

You make the single crochet stitches in the back-loop of the stitches and then you will work double crochet stitches in the remaining front loop of a stitch, 2 rows prior in specific places to create the design.

The effect is similar to Mosaic Knitting (or Slip Stitch Knitting) but using crochet stitches instead. This technique is like the one used to create the old-time vintage Native American Navajo Afghans.

Only simple stitches are used to make this afghan, so I feel a determined beginner would be able to master the pattern. You will only need to understand where to find the front loops and back loops of your stitches, single crochet, double crochet and slip stitches.

Carol has prepared a video to help you master the technique too. Watch the video here.

The Crochet Picket Fence Afghan ePattern is available for purchase from Shady Lane Original Crochet Designs. The current price (which is subject to change) at the time of this post being written is $7.95 USD.

  1. What a lovely pattern. Thanks for introducing me to this designer.

  2. Thank you for your review. I didn’t realize her patterns were worked in the back loop until you mentioned it. That explains the pronounced stitching and flat background. I love these designs but have yet to make any bobble type blanket……yet!

  3. My favorite Shady Lane pattern is the Howling Wolf Afghan.

  4. I love her Nite Nite Teddy Bear Afghan but this Picket Fence afghan is really cool.

  5. Native American Totes is one of my favorite patterns. I love native american style crochet and I also love tote bags.

  6. My favorite pattern from Shady Lane Original Designs is the Native American Potholders. I like to use them as mug rugs!

  7. So many lovely patterns, it’s hard to pick a favorite as I like all of them.
