Meet Susanna
Question: Who are you? Tell me about yourself.
I am Susanna, the designer behind fosbasdesigns.com. I was taught to crochet and knit at a very young age. My love for unique crochet designs made me start designing my own patterns about 7 years ago. I have a flare for reversible and convertible crochet designs as I get bored with monotonous use of projects. When not crocheting, you would find me with my family, either reading a book or watching a good movie.
Question: How did you learn how to crochet? How long have you been crocheting?
I would say when I was about 7. Its been 12 years cumulatively.
Question: Do you have any tips for new crocheters? Any guidance to make them successful at a new hobby?
1. Have fun with yarn and your hook, plenty patience and lots of practice are helpful.
2. Stitch markers are your friends, you can even use scrap yarns as markers.
3. Get the best tools for your craft.
4. Familiarize yourself with the best yarn for each project and the ones to avoid. I have a detailed post here to guide you – https://fosbasdesigns.com/best-yarn-to-crochet-with-for-beginners-and-the-ones-you-should-avoid/
5. When you work with difficult yarns, make sure to trace your work with your fingers.
6. You can also combine fuzzy yarn with another type of yarn and use contrasting colors. You can read more pro tips here https://fosbasdesigns.com/pro-tips-for-crocheting-with-fuzzy-yarn/
Question: What do you enjoy crocheting the most?
It’s so much fun to make Garments. Especially when the garment can be worn in different ways or when it is reversible!
The Reversible crochet dress is one that can be worn in at least 12 different ways. You can check out the ways I wear it here – https://fosbasdesigns.com/crochet-reversible-stitch-chic-convertible-dress/
Likewise is the convertible dress with multiple ways to wearing it. https://fosbasdesigns.com/crochet-convertible-dress-styled-in-many-ways/
Other than making garments, I do love crocheting and designing shawls. The pretty in purple shawl is one of my favorite, it can also be worn as a vest. The shawl can be seen here on my blog – https://fosbasdesigns.com/easy-crochet-shawl-convertible-pattern/
The brava convertible rectangular shawl is another beautiful one that can be styled in multiple ways. https://fosbasdesigns.com/easy-crochet-shawl-pattern/
Question: What else are you passionate about (other than crochet)?
I love baking and experimenting with cooking!!
Question: What prompted you to start designing?
My love for creating unique projects made me start designing my own patterns. I have always wanted garments that can be styled in multiple ways or that can fit into different seasons or occasions.
Question: How long have you been designing and where do you publish your patterns?
It’s been 7 years. My patterns are available on my website – fosbasdesigns.com, Ravelry and on on Etsy.
Question: What drives you to create? Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
My inspiration comes from nature, I do take long walks in the evenings and usually have time to think about what to design next.
Question: What do you enjoy designing the most?
Garments – Crochet sweaters, crochet dress and skirts.
Question: What tips would you give to someone interested in designing and blogging?
You should do it. Start now!
For designing – Testing for other designers can be a great place to start. Get your patterns tested and if possible, a tech editor.
Blogging – Invest in a good SEO course, you would be glad in the long run.
