Meet Sonya

Question: Who are you? Tell me about yourself.

Hi, I’m Sonya! I’m a crafter, and of course crocheter, living in Maine with my husband, 3 kids, and 3 cat babies! When I’m not crocheting, I love to sew and woodwork… although I dabble in many craft mediums. Creating is my soul food!

Question: How did you learn how to crochet? How long have you been crocheting?

I have been crocheting for about 22 years, but I just started designing crochet patterns 10 years ago. I learned to crochet from a teach yourself kit!

Question: Do you have any tips for new crocheters? Any guidance to make them successful at a new hobby?

There is very few solid rules for crocheting! You may hear there is a right and wrong way, but there isn’t! Hold your hook how it feels most comfortable, hold your yarn how it feels most comfortable and just explore! Crochet is truly an open canvas to spill out all of your creativity! And most importantly, the yarn and hook combo listed on yarn labels is just a suggestion, you can use a really big hook with a very thin yarn if you feel like it (unless you’re following a pattern that is.. in that case, follow the designer’s instructions 😉)

Question: What do you enjoy crocheting the most?

Right now I’m really enjoying quickie projects! Anything that takes just a few hours or less. But in the big scheme, I have crocheted (and designed patterns for) amigurumi, afghans, clothing, home decor…and more!

Question: What else are you passionate about (other than crochet)?

I’m totally passionate about crafting! I just want to recruit the world to sit down and get creative somehow! Whether you crochet, knit, sew, paint… anything at all! It brings a certain peace when you can express yourself creatively.

Question: What prompted you to start designing?

I started out like many do: crocheting physical items to sell. That led me to design a few items for sale & then one day a woman named Gail asked me for the crochet pattern for my Beautiful Ducklings design & it sparked a flame! I have been designing crochet patterns ever since!

Question: How long have you been designing and where do you publish your patterns?

I have been designing since 2012 and you can find my patterns on my website blackstone-designs.com, plus you can find those and more on Etsy, Ravelry, LoveCrafts, and Ribblr.

Question: What drives you to create? Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

I love functional crochet the most, so I usually have a need or desire for something & my wheels start turning. For instance, I recently started designing Animal Soup Bowl Cozies (which is rapidly becoming a series ❤️), because we use bowl cozies often and the idea of cute ones that my daughter would enjoy came to me. Inspiration can come from anywhere though!

Question: What do you enjoy designing the most?

The same as what I enjoy crocheting! It really all depends on my mood, but I always design what I like to crochet myself.

Question: What tips would you give to someone interested in designing and blogging?

Go for it! I think is would be remiss to not mention to make sure your designs are original, but otherwise the world is your oyster! Design what makes you happy, there will always be someone who feels the same way as you!

Question: What goals have you set for yourself for the future?

I have near future plans to self publish a book! That’s my most immediate goal, but in general just keep designing and growing. I have been trying to be better at posting on social media and making videos for Reels and TikTok. I also plan to start putting out YouTube videos for my designs, and the stitches used, very soon!

Question: Who are your favorite makers? How have they inspired you?

OMGosh, I wouldn’t even know where to start. I follow makers from many different medias, so it’s hard to include everyone I love to watch, but I adore A Crocheted Simplicity & Repeat Crafter Me for crochet patterns, Caution: Artist at Play & Andrea Nelson Art for artwork, Patterns for Pirates & Little Lizard King for sewing… yeah, there’s just too many. This doesn’t even scratch the surface.

Question: Do you have a favorite yarn you like to use when you are crocheting? What colors and fibers do you gravitate toward when choosing your yarn?

I love natural fiber yarns most, but I honestly think I might use worsted weight acrylic the most. I don’t really have a favorite yarn per se, but I have always enjoyed Knit Picks yarns, especially Brava, and Paintbox Yarns!

Question: Do you have anything else you’d like to share with us?

You can find Blackstone Designs on all the big social media sites, and you can sign up for my newsletter right from my blog! If you’re interested in my other craft patterns, such as sewing or kids crafts, you can visit shessocreative.com!
