Hi Everybody! Today it’s my turn to share a free amigurumi pattern for the Fourth Annual Softie Crochet Along with CAL Central Crochet! For my contribution, I have designed this adorable crochet kitten pattern.

2021 Softie-Crochet-Along
#fairfieldworld #CALCentralCrochet

My sister Caitlin is having a baby later this month (on my birthday!!) and I (like any crochet crazy Auntie) have started crocheting things for Nessa (my niece’s name is Vanessa – but Caitie calls her Nessa).

This crochet kitten pattern (Nessa’s Kitten) can be crocheted with 1 single ball of Bernat Pop! Yarn (you only need 148 yds in total) and a 3.75 mm (F) crochet hook. The pattern is easy-to-follow and easy-to-crochet. You can of course use the yarn and hook of your choice – I recommend using a 3.75 mm (F) hook with Medium Weight Yarn [4].

For all the details on the CAL, including the other free softie patterns and the end of CAL giveaway, please visit Marie’s post here: Fourth Annual Softie Crochet Along. Thank you to Fairfield Processing Inc. for providing each participating designer with Poly-Fil fiber filling or Poly-Fil Poly Pellets weighted stuffing beads!

PS – My daughter (she’s 11 now) took some of today’s photos for me (impromptu ‘bring your child to work day’) and I’m really impressed by her perspective on our Crochet Kitten. Thank you for me with m post today Darla! xo love you, Mom

Notes:

Choose which colors from the Bernat Pop! skein you want to use for your crocheted cat. You can simply start from the ball and crochet with the color that is available or wind your skein into smaller color sections. I selected dark brown (CC) for the ears and the tips of the arms, legs and tail and the light beige (MC) color for my cat’s body.

I usually start rounds with a color change with a standing st. If you prefer a sl st join and a turning chain, feel free to substitute. For example, see R5 in the Crochet Kitten Arms section.

Crochet Kitten Finishing Instructions

Add a small amount of Poly-fil to the cat arms, legs and tail. You may wish to use a pencil eraser to assist you with the stuffing. I used a small amount (just a small pinch) and pushed it toward the CC sections to give the limbs a bit more structure. This is not necessary and can be omitted if you like the flat look instead.

See images for assembly of arms, legs, tail and ears.  Using your yarn and yarn needle, hand stitch the pieces to the cat body and head. I worked under one loop of the cat body and one loop of the arm (leg, tail, ear) for each stitch I made in the final round of the arm (leg, tail, ear). Weave in ends securely.

For the cat nose and eyelashes I used the CC color and my yarn needle and hand stitched them. Do not pull tightly as it will cause the face to pucker where you make your stitches. Please see the following image for placement.

My daughter took this photo of our Crochet Kitten too!

If you would like your cat to have a weighted bottom, I recommend using a stocking (nylon sock) and filling it with Poly Pellets. Close the nylon sock by tying it tightly and insert it into the Cat Body when you complete R46. Then add more Poly-Fil around it before R48.

If you would like the Cat Tail to be bendy, insert a pipe cleaner into the tail before you sew the tail to the Cat Body.
