Crochet Elephant Afghan and Baby Cocoon Pattern

This month, Carol Hegar from Shady Lane Original Crochet Designs has released a brand-new pattern – Elephant Afghan and Baby Cocoon – and we will be celebrating this release by selecting 2 winners for our giveaway this month!

Afghan Sizes

  1. Adult Afghan | 49.75 inches X 62.5 inches | 4 mm (G) hook and Medium Worsted Weight Yarn [4] in 4 colors
  2. Child-Size Afghan | 44.25 inches X 55.5 inches | 3.75 mm (F) hook and Baby / Sport / DK Weight Yarn [3] in 4 colors
  3. Baby Afghan | 39.75 inches X 50 inches | 3.50 mm (E) hook and Baby / Sport / DK Weight Yarn [3] in 4 colors

The afghans include graphs so you can choose to work from the written instructions, the graphs, or a combination of both.

Baby Cocoon Size

The baby cocoon measures approximately 18 inches X 19 inches and sized to fit a baby aged newborn to 3 months.

To make the baby cocoon you will need a 3.75 mm (E) hook and Baby Weight Yarn [3] in 3 colors.

The baby cocoon includes a graph and full written instructions.

These designs are made using simple crochet stitches. All color changes are made at beginning of rows, so you are only working with one color at a time.

The pattern is formed by cleverly placing dropped dc stitches into the front loop of a stitch from two rows before. It’s very similar in looks to mosaic (or slip stitch) knitting but it is made with easy crochet stitches instead!

Visit Carol’s website to watch her video tutorial that shows you how easy this stitch technique is to do! Watch the video here.

Carol has been specializing in this technique since the mid 1980’s. The technique is the same stitch technique that was used to create the “Trail of Tears” afghan that was so popular in the 1970’s.

It has become very popular again lately using the name of Mosaic Crochet.

The patterns include instructions written in US Crochet Terms. Optional graphs are provided to illustrate the stitches for those who prefer working from graphs.

Please take the time to read page 3 of the pattern to learn about how the projects are constructed and to review the border and edging options.

The afghan can have either a pocket envelope border, or a fringed edging – both options mean you will have very few ends to sew in when you are finished!

The Elephant Afghan and Baby Cocoon ePattern is available for purchase from Shady Lane Original Crochet Designs. The current price (which is subject to change) at the time of this post being written is $8.95 USD.

If you would like to get your own copy today, you can use this coupon to receive 15% off: OOMB and the coupon can be used on any of the patterns on her site.

If you win the raffle and you have already purchased the booklet, Carol will be happy to substitute another Shady Lane ePattern of your choice from her designs!

If you enjoy using the Dropped Double Crochet technique, then I suggest you check out the other patterns available from Carol for Native American designs, hearts, diamonds, teddy bears, choo-choo trains, kitty cats and castles on her website.

  1. I love the Taos poncho and Afghan pattern! It is stunning. Thank you for the opportunity to see Carol Hegar’s designs.

  2. This Elephant Cocoon & Baby blanket is SUPER CUTE. But, I still really like her Nite Nite Teddy Bear Afghan, though she has many really cute designs.
