Cozy Hugs Hat Pattern Instructions
The Cozy Hugs Hat is crocheted from the band to the top of the hat. The band is worked back and forth in rows. The remainder of the hat is worked in rounds. We will use a simple closing method (demonstrated here: Simple Closing Method for Hats) to close the top of the hat neatly.
Hat Band
With your 5 mm (H) hook.
R1: Leaving a 10 inch tail of yarn (you will use this to seam the band closed at the end), ch 10. 1 sc in 2nd ch from the hook and in each rem ch across. Ch 1, turn. [9]
R2-55: 1 sc in the bl of each ch across, ch 1, turn. [9]
Do not finish off. Rotate your work to work across the row ends of the band.
Hat Body
With your 6 mm (J) hook.
Rnd 1: Work 55 sc evenly across the row ends of the hat. [55]
Rnd 2: 1 sc in the first st. *Sk next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk next 2 sts, 1 sc in next st**. Rep from * to ** 9 times. [9 shells, 10 sc]
Rnd 3: 1 dc in the first st, ch 2, sk next 2 dc, *1 sc in next dc, ch 2, sk next 2 dc, 1 dc in next sc, ch 2, sk next 2 dc**. Rep from * to ** 8 times. 1 sc in next dc, ch 2, sk next 2 dc, 1 dc in last sc. [10 dc, 18 ch 2, 9 sc]
Rnd 4: 1 sc in first dc. Sk all ch2sp for this round. *5 dc in next sc, 1 sc in next dc**. Rep from * to ** 9 times. [9 shells, 10 sc]
Rep R3 and R4: 5 more times.
Now we are going to decrease a few stitches to shape the hat at the top.
Rnd 15: 1 sc in the first st, ch 1, sk next 2 dc, *1 sc in the next dc, ch 1, sk next 2 dc, 1 sc in next sc, ch 1, sk next 2 dc**. Rep from * to ** 8 times. 1 sc in next dc, ch 1, sk next 2 dc, 1 sc in last sc. [19 sc, 18 ch 1]
Rnd 16: 1 sc in each sc around. Sk all ch1sp. [19 sc]
Rnd 17: *Sc2tog**. Rep from * to ** 9 times. 1 sc in the last sc. Finish off leaving a long tail for closing the top of the hat.
Finishing
You will now weave in and out of the front loops of the remaining 10 stitches from Rnd 17 and pull to cinch the hat top closed. View this tutorial for help: Simple Closing Method for Hats
Using your remaining yarn tail from R1 of the project, whip stitch the hat band closed. Finish off and weave in all remaining yarn ends.
