Quick Beginner Friendly Crochet Dishcloth Pattern

The Yarn

For this month’s Dishcloth of the Month Club project I used approximately 106 yards (98 meters) of Lily Sugar ‘n Cream Super Size yarn. This yarn is 100% cotton. Each 113 g ball contains approximately 200 yards (184 meters).

This strong cotton yarn creates durable dishcloths that hold up beautifully to countless cleaning tasks!

The dishcloth crochet pattern below is written to make a 10 X 10 inch project, but you can make your project to any size you wish with the stitch multiple I have included in the pattern.

Difficulty Level

Finished Sizes

  • Washcloth width approximately 10 inches X 10 inches length.

Gauge

  • Approximately 7 dc3tog clusters per 4 inches and 8 rows per 4 inches, worked in pattern (beginning at R1).

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

  • st/sts – stitch/stitches
  • yds – yards
  • * to **– Repeat the instructions between the asterisks the number of times indicated. This repeat will contain multiple instructions.
  • [] – at the end of the row – the total number of stitches
  • () – important notes AND sets of stitches to be worked within one stitch, or space

Special Stitches

Double Crochet 3 Together Cluster (dc3tog-cl)

The dc3tog-cl is made into a single ch1sp.

*Yarn over, insert hook into the ch1sp, yarn over and pull up 1 loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops**. Work from * to ** three times. Yarn over and pull through all remaining loops to complete the stitch.

Helpful Tutorials

Notes:

  • Stitch multiple: (2+1) + 2 for the turning chain
  • Initial ch 2 counts as 1 hdc. 
  • Initial (Ch 3 and 1 dc) count as a dc2tog-cl.
  • The dc3tog-cl is made in a single stitch or a single chain space.
  • When I work into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. Feel free to work in the back loop instead if you prefer.
  • To make this dishcloth longer, work more repeat rows.
  • To make this dishcloth wider, chain more stitches using the stitch multiple.

Cottage Dishcloth Pattern

This project is crocheted widthwise in rows.

Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

R1: Ch 33, sk the first 2 chs (this counts as 1 hdc). 1 hdc in the next ch. *Skip 1 ch, (1 hdc, ch 1, 1 hdc) in the next ch**. Work from * to ** across to the last 2 chs. Sk 1 ch, 2 hdc in the last ch. Turn. [32 hdc, 14 ch1sp]

Skip all stitches not mentioned.

R2: (Ch 3 and 1 dc) in the first st. *Ch 1, dc3tog-cl in the next ch1sp**. Work from * to ** across to last st. Ch 1, dc2tog-cl in the top of the last st. Turn. [2 dc2tog-cl, 14 dc3tog-cl]

R3: Ch 2, sk the first st (at the base of the ch 2). *(1 hdc, ch 1, 1 hdc) into the next ch1sp**. Work from * to ** across to the last st. 1 hdc in the last st. Turn. [32 hdc, 14 ch1sp]

R4: Ch 3 (this counts as 1 dc). Sk the first st (the one at the base of the ch 3) dc3tog-cl in the next ch1sp. *Ch 1, dc3tog-cl in the next ch1sp**. Work from * to ** across to the last st. 1 dc in the last st. Turn. [2 dc, 14 dc3tog-cl]

R5: Ch 2 (this counts as 1 hdc) and 1hdc in the first st. *(1 hdc, ch 1, 1 hdc) in the next ch1sp**. Work from * to ** across to the last st. 2 hdc in the last st. Turn. [32 hdc, 14 ch1sp]

R6-R17: Rep R2 to R5.

Rotate your work to add the edging.

Edging

Rnd 1: Work sc stitches evenly along the side edge, (1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc) in the corner st, rotate your work to continue across the foundation chain, work 1 sc in each ch across, (1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc) in the corner st, rotate your work to continue along the side edge, try to make the same number of sc stitches along this side edge as you did on the opposite side edge, (1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc) in the corner st, rotate your work to continue across R17, 1 sc in each hdc across (sk all ch1sp), (1 sc, ch 1, 1sc) in the corner st.

Rnd 2: Make 1 sc in each sc around and (1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc) in each corner ch1sp.

Rnd 3: Make 1 sl st in each st around, sk each ch1sp. When you reach the final ch1sp, ch 18, sl st to the first ch and ch1sp (together) and sl st to the final st of the round.

Proceed to finishing instructions.

Finishing Instructions:

  • Finish off and weave in ends.
