This hat also looks pretty inside out!

Convertible Slouch Hat Free Pattern

Fit:  Woman 21-22” circumference, 12” height as slouch hat, 8.5” height for toque style

Gauge:  5 pattern stitches and 13 rows = 4”
16 fpdc/bpdc = 4”, 7 rounds fpdc/bpdc = 2”
Hooks:  5.5 mm (I-9) and 5.00 mm (H-8)

Materials:
Red Heart Soft – 4oz/113g; 212yds/194m – 1 ball Embers, 1 ball Paprika, yarn needle, scissors, stitch marker

Abbreviations Used:
ch-chain, sc-single crochet, dc-double crochet, hdc-half double crochet, fpdc – front post double crochet, bpdc – back post double crochet, sl st-slip stitch, st-stitch, sts-stiches, AL-adjustable loop, * * – repeat the instructions contained between the *s the number of times specified

Pattern Stitch: * (1 sc and 2 dc) in the first st, skip 2 sts *

Using 5.50 mm hook and Colour 1 (I used Embers)

Round 1: ch 4, ss to the 1st ch to create a loop and crochet 9 hdc in the loop [9]
Round 2: 2 hdc in each st around [18]
Round 3: (1 hdc in the 1st st, 2 hdc in the next st) 9 times [27]
Round 4: (1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 hdc in the next st) 9 times [36]
Round 5: (1 hdc in each of the next 3sts, 2 hdc in the next st) 9 times [45]

Round 6: (1 hdc in each of the next 4 sts, 2 hdc in the next st) 9 times [54]
Round 7: (1 hdc in each of the next 5 sts, 2 hdc in the next st) 9 times [63]
Round 8: (1 hdc in each of the next 6sts, 2 hdc in the next st) 9 times [72]
Round 9: (1 hdc in each of the next 7 sts, 2 hdc in the next st) 9 times [81]

Stitch Instructions:

FPDC: Yarn over the hook, insert the hook around the post of the stitch below, from front to back to front;  yarn over the hook and pull up one loop, (yarn over the hook, draw through two loops on the hook) twice.

BPDC:  Yarn over the hook, insert the hook around the post of the stitch below, from back to front to back;  yarn over the hook and pull up one loop, (yarn over the hook, draw through two loops on the hook) twice.

Round 10: * (1 sc and 2 dc) in the first st, skip 2 sts * repeat around (27 times) [81]
Round 11: * (1 sc and 2 dc) in the first st, skip 2 sts* repeat around (27 times) [81]
The skipped stitches are the dc stitches of the previous round.
Round 12-26: repeat round 11 [81]
Round 27: repeat round 11, ss to the 1st sc of the round and FO.

If you wish, switch to a contrast colour (I used  Paprika):

Change to the 5.00 mm hook
Round 1: 1 hdc in each st around, ss to the 1st hdc of the round [81]
Round 2: (1 fpdc in the first st, 1 bpdc in the next st)  40 times, 1 fpdc in the last st [81]
Round 3-7: repeat Round 2 [81]
Round 8-12: repeat Round 2 [81]
Change to the 5.50 mm hook
Finishing round: *(1sc & 2dc) in the first st, skip 2sts* around (27 times), ss to the first st, and finish off, weave in loose ends [81]
