Supplies

  • Yarn: Lion Brand Yarns Unique (Colorway: PotPourri) – 202 g for adult medium
  • Hook 9.0 mm (M/N) and 5.0 mm (H)
  • Scissors, Yarn Needle, Stitch Marker (optional)

Gauge

measurement taken at round 5: 4 sets of (cluster, ch 2) = 4 inches
8 rows = 4 inches

Abbreviations

US Terminology used

beg – beginning
ch – chain
cl – cluster (see special stitches below)
dc – double crochet
R – row/round
rem – remaining
rep – repeat
sc – single crochet
sk – skip
sl st – slip stitch
st/sts – stitch/stitches
* – Repeat the instructions between the asterisks the number of times indicated. This repeat will contain of multiple instructions.
() – Repeat the instructions between the parentheses the number of times indicated.
[] – at the end of the row – the total number of stitches

Special Stitch

Cluster: cl
Insert hook into the next st, yarn over and pull up 1 loop, *yarn over and insert hook into the same st, yarn over the hook and pull up 1 loop**; rep from * to ** one more time (6 loops on the hook). Yarn over and pull through all loops to complete the stitch.

Adult Cluster Stitch Slouch Hat Pattern Instructions

Adult Sizes

Adult Small: sized to fit a 21″ head size; 10 inches height

Adult Medium: sized to fit a 22″ head size; 11 inches height

Adult Large: sized to fit a 23″ head size; 12 inches height

Pattern Instructions

Brim

Using a 5 mm (H) hook

R1: Leave a long tail (about 10″). Ch 11, beg in 2nd ch from hook and work 1 BLsc in each st across, ch 1, turn [10]

R2: 1 sc in the first st, 1 BLsc in each of the next 8 sts, 1 sc in the last st, ch 1, turn [10]

For Adult Small work:

R3-R58: rep R2 [10]

For Adult Medium work:

R3-R60: rep R2 [10]

For Adult Large work: 

R3-R62: rep R2 [10]

All Adult Sizes continue:

You can seam up the band using the yarn end you left in R1 now; or after R3 of the Hat Body below (which is when I seam it).

You will now be working along the row ends (edges) of the band.

Main Hat Body

Note: the ch 2 at the beginning of the round does not count as a stitch

Using 9 mm (M/N) hook

R1: *1 sc in the first row end, sk 1 row end, ch 1** 30 times, sl st to the 1st ch1sp to join [58 (60) 62]

R2: (ch 2, cluster in the ch1sp) *cluster in the next ch1sp, ch 1; sk the next sc** 30 times, sl st to the first cluster to join [58 (60) 62]

R3: (cluster, ch 1) in each ch1sp around (Note: sk all other sts) [58 (60) 62]

For Adult Small work:

R4-R13: Rep R3 [58]

R14: Working in the ch1sps only, 1 sc in the first ch1sp;  sc2tog around for each remaining ch1sp (Note: sk all other sts), sl st into the first sc2tog to join [15]

R15: Work 1 Cl in each st around [15]

R16: 1 sc in the first st, sc2tog around in the remaining sts [8]

R4-R15: Rep R3 [60]

R16: Working in the ch1sps only, sc2tog around (Note: sk all other sts), sl st into the first sc2tog to join [15]

R17: Work 1 Cl in each st around [15]

R18: 1 sc in the first st, sc2tog around in the remaining sts [8]

R4-R17: Rep R3 [62]

Child Sizes

3-5 years: sized to fit a 20″ head and 8 inches in height

6-10 years: sized to fit a 20″ head and 9 inches in height

Toddler Sizes

6-12 months: sized to fit a 18″ head and 7.25 inches in height

12-24 months: sized to fit a 19″ head and 7.5 inches in height

  1. Hi J, I am going to double check this for you tonight but I am thinking that there should be 31 clusters and 31 ch-1 for the Adult Large Size. I wrote this a few years ago but for some reason I think I counted the ch-1. I will try to work one up tonight to double check. Thanks! Rhondda

  2. I love this pattern, but need clarification on the adult size large. Are there suppose to be 62 clusters on each row?

  3. I’ve never been a fan of slouch hats as I love my beanies too much. But I’ve changed my mind after seeing this hat! My gosh, it’s gorgeous. The yarn, the pattern–it’s classy while looking cozy warm at the same time. Thank you for the pattern and the wonderful yarn selection!
