The Classic Comfort Crochet Hat is a warm, practical hat designed to coordinate with my Classic Comfort Crochet Cowl. It’s a comfortable everyday hat with a bit of slouch, and it can also be worn as a beanie by folding the band up.

This pattern is worked from the bottom up in one piece, starting with ribbed rows for the band and continuing in joined rounds for the main hat. It’s a great project for making hats in multiple sizes, from tiny preemie hats to adult large.

The Classic Comfort Crochet Hat is simple, adjustable, and perfect for everyday wear.

The free written pattern is available in my post below, or if you prefer, you can purchase the ad-free PDF crochet pattern from my shop.

The Classic Comfort Crochet Hat is worked bottom-up with a ribbed band and can be worn slouchy or folded as a beanie. Sizes from preemie to adult large.

Special Stitches

Back Bar or third (3rd) loop of the stitch.

So, where do I put my hook? With your work facing you, find the top of the stitch (this is often referred to as the ‘v’ of the stitch). The loop that is closest to you is called the front loop and the loop that is further away from you is the back loop.

Now tip your project a little bit more so you can peek just behind and below that back loop. See that extra loop back there? That is the back bar of the stitch. All the half double crochet stitches for this hat are crocheted into that loop.

The back bar of the stitch is the loop that you will find directly behind and beneath the back loop of the half double crochet stitch.

Notes:

  • Multiple of 1
  • The first st of every round will contain the sl st join from the previous round, as well as, a ch 1 and the first st of the round.
  • The turning ch 1 does not count as a stitch and we do not work into it.
  • The baby sizes have a narrower hat band (1 inch width). Sizes Toddler (12-24 months) and up have a 2 inch hat band.
  • These hats will stretch approximately 3 inches (easily).
  • To increase the hat height by 1 inch, work an extra repeat set (4 rounds)
  • To decrease the hat height by 1 inch, work one less repeat set (4 rounds)
