If you love simple crochet projects you can actually wear every day, you’re going to enjoy making my Classic Comfort Crochet Cowl. This cowl is warm, comfortable, and works up quickly using soft worsted weight yarn.
It’s the kind of project you can crochet for yourself, make as a gift, or stitch up in a few different colors so you always have one ready to grab on chilly mornings.

Why You’ll Love This Crochet Cowl
This is one of those patterns that looks great without being complicated. The stitches create a cozy texture, and the finished cowl sits comfortably around your neck without feeling bulky.
It’s also a relaxing project to crochet while watching TV, listening to an audiobook, or winding down at the end of the day.
The Yarn

Special Techniques
Back Bar or Third (3rd) Loop of the Stitch
So, where do I put my hook? With your work facing you, find the top of the stitch (this is often referred to as the ‘v’ of the stitch). The loop that is closest to you is called the front loop and the loop that is further away from you is the back loop.
Now tip your project a little bit more so you can peek just behind and below that back loop. See that extra loop back there? That is the back bar of the stitch. All the half double crochet stitches for this hat are crocheted into that loop.
The back bar of the stitch is the loop that you will find directly behind and beneath the back loop of the half double crochet stitch.

Notes:
- Multiple of 1
- When I work into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. You can work under the back loop only if you prefer.
- The first st of every round will contain the sl st join from the previous round, as well as, the first st of the round.
- The turning ch 1 does not count as a stitch and we do not work into it.
- If you’d like to increase the scarf length, chain more stitches using the stitch multiple.
- If you’d like to increase the height of the project, work more rows following the stitch repeat.

Tips for Customizing Your Cowl
One of my favorite things about cowls is how easy they are to customize.
Here are a few simple ways to make this one your own:
- Crochet it taller for extra warmth
- Make it longer for a light everyday infinity scarf
- Use a different #4 yarn to change the look and texture
- Try a solid shade for a classic look or a colorway for subtle striping
