The Chunky Starry Eyed Scarf Crochet Pattern was originally designed by Joanita Theron. Joanita retired this design from her site and sold the full-pattern rights to Oombawka Design, Ltd. This pattern is now available exclusively at Oombawka Design Crochet. This pattern has been rewritten, updated and includes both a photo tutorial and video tutorial.

Easy Crochet Scarf Pattern: Chunky Starry Eyed Scarf
Supplies
- Yarn: Elle Gold Chunky. 3.53 oz (100 g) and 165 yds (151 m). 100% Acrylic. Bulky Weight Yarn [5]. Machine wash and air dry.
- Color: 3 skeins Ivory
- Crochet Hook: 5 mm (H)
- Finished Project: Scarf: approximately 495 yds
- Scissors, Tapestry Needle (yarn needle)
For the tutorial I used Knit Picks City Tweed Aran. 3.52 oz (100 g) and 164 yds (150 m). 55% Merino wool, 25% Superfine alpaca, 20% Donegal tweed. Aran (Heavy Worsted) Weight Yarn [4]. Hand wash, dry flat. Color: Snowshoe for the main section and Cobalt for the optional edging.
Another great substitute would by King Cole Big Value Chunky. 3.52 oz (100 g) and 167 yds (152 m). 100% Acrylic. Chunky Weight Yarn [5]. Gentle wash at 40°C. Tumble dry low heat. Do not bleach. Do not iron. Dry clean any solvent.

Finished Sizes
- Scarf width approximately 7.5 inches X 63 inches length.
- Optional Bottom edging adds 0.75 inches height.
Gauge
- Approximately 3 sets of “1 dc, (ch 1, 1 dc) 3 times” per 4 inches and 3 rows per 2 inches worked in pattern. The 3 sets has 12 dc and 9 ch1sp.
You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

- * to ** – Repeat the instructions between the asterisks the number of times indicated. This repeat will contain multiple instructions.
- [ ] – at the end of the row – the total number of stitches
- ( ) – important notes AND sets of stitches to be worked within one stitch, or space
Helpful Tutorial
Notes:
- Stitch multiple of 4 + 4 for the turning ch
- Initial ch 3 COUNTS as 1 dc.
- When I work into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. You can work under the back loop only if you prefer.
- To make this scarf longer, work more rows using the repeat section of the pattern.
- To make this scarf wider, chain more stitches using the stitch multiple.

Chunky Starry Eyed Scarf Pattern
This project is crocheted widthwise in rows.
Using your 5 mm (H) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):
R1: Ch 28, sk the first 7 chs (counts as 1 ch7sp), make 1 dc, (ch 1, 1 dc) 3 times in the next ch. This is your first shell stitch. *Sk the next 3 chs, make 1 dc, (ch 1, 1 dc) 3 times in the next ch**. Work from * to ** across to the last 4 chs. Sk the next 3 chs, make 1 dc in the last ch. Turn. [25 dc, 18 ch1sp, 1 ch7sp]
Note: Skip all stitches not mentioned. Each shell stitch is made into the second ch1sp within a shell stitch from the previous row.
R2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc). *Make 1 dc, (ch 1, 1 dc) 3 times in the second ch1sp of the shell stitch**. Work from * to ** across to the last ch7sp. Make 1 dc in the last ch made from the foundation ch (the one immediately beside the first dc in R1). [26 dc, 18 ch1sp]
R3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc). *Make 1 dc, (ch 1, 1 dc) 3 times in the second ch1sp of the shell stitch**. Work from * to ** across to the last dc. Make 1 dc in the last dc. [26 dc, 18 ch1sp]
R4-R94 : Rep R3. [26 dc, 18 ch1sp]
Finish off.
Proceed to Optional Edging Row.
Optional Edging Row:
Place the fabric with RS (right side)facing and the foundation chain (R1) in front of you (if you are right handed the initial yarn tail from R1 will be on the right side of the fabric; if you are left handed the initial yarn tail from R1 will be on the left side of the fabric).
R1: Join with a standing dc, or a sl st, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc). *Make 1 dc, (ch 1, 1 dc) 3 times in the same chsp as the shell stitch made in R1**. Work from * to ** across to the last ch7sp. Make 1 dc in the fourth skipped ch. [26 dc, 18 ch1sp]
Proceed to Finishing Instructions.
Finishing Instructions:
- Finish off and weave in your ends.

You can use any yarn and hook to make this project!
- With the yarn and hook you’ve chosen for the project, chain until you reach the width you’d like for your scarf (shawl, or blanket); or chain until your length measures 7.5 inches.
- Follow the pattern as written.
- Continue crocheting until your project is the length you would like it to be, or until it measures approximately 63 inches long.
- Proceed to optional edging instructions if you wish.
- Proceed to finishing instructions.
- Block gently if desired.
