Cute Cat Bookmark Pattern

This bookmark is so much fun and looks adorable! It’s the perfect friend to have when you’re reading stories, and it can save your spot until you come back to the story again.

Supplies

  • Yarn: DK Light Worsted Weight Yarn
  • Colors: brown, beige, black
  • Crochet Hooks: 4 mm (G)
  • Yardage: 50 grams in brown, 25 grams in beige and a small amount in black
  • Scissors, Yarn Needle, Stitch Marker, 5 small buttons, fiberfill stuffing

Difficulty Level

  • Easy-Intermediate

Finished Sizes

  • 26 cm in length and 8 cm in width

Gauge

  • approximately 22 sts per 4 inches and 30 rows in 4 inches

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size of your project will also be different.

Cute Cat Bookmark Pattern

The main cat bookmark (body, head, ears and straps) are crocheted in rows. The eyes and cheeks are made in continuous rounds and added to he cat bookmark.

BODY

Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook, or size required for gauge:

R1: With brown: Ch 13, sk the first 3 chs (counts as 1 dc), 1 sc in the next ch. *1 dc in the next ch, 1 sc in the next ch**. Work from * to ** across to the last ch. 1 dc in the last ch, turn. [5 sc, 6 dc]

R2: Ch 1, 1 sc in the first st, 1 dc in the next st. *1 sc in the next st, 1 dc in the next st**. Work from * to ** across to the last st. 1 sc in the last st (tip: this is the top of the ch 3), turn. [6 sc, 5 dc]

R3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 sc in the next st. *1 dc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st**. Work from * to ** across to the last st. 1 dc in the last st, turn. [5 sc, 6 dc]

Repeat R2 and R3 until the piece measures approximately 16 cm (6 inches), do not finish off.

HEAD

Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook, or size required for gauge:

R1: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn. [11 sc]

R2: Ch 1, 2 sc in the first st, 1 sc in each of the next 9 sts, 2 sc in the last st, turn. [13 sc]

R3: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn. [13 sc]

R4: Ch 1, 2 sc in the first st, 1 sc in each of the next 11 sts, 2 sc in the last st, turn. [15 sc]

R5-R8: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn. [15 sc]

R9: Ch 1, sc2tog, 1 sc in each of the next 11 sts, sc2tog, turn. [13 sc]

R10: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn. [13 sc]

R11: Ch 1, sc2tog, 1 sc in each of the next 9 sts, sc2tog, turn. [11 sc]

R12: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn. [11 sc]

Do not finish off.

EARS

R1-R2: Ch 1, 1 sc in each of the first 5 sts, sk all rem sts, turn. [5 sc]

R3: Ch 1, sc2tog, 1 sc in the first st, sc2tog, turn. [3 sc]

R4: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn. [3 sc]

R5: Sc3tog. Finish off. [1 sc]

Rejoin brown yarn on the other edge and repeat instructions for the ear. Do not finish off yarn, continue working around the outer edges of the project (body and ears) making loose slip stitches into each stitch and row end. Finish off and weave in ends.

STRAPS

Bottom

R1: With cream yarn and a 4 mm (G) crochet hook and wrong side facing (WS), join your yarn in the fifth stitch with 1 sc. 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, turn. [5 sc]

R2-R20: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn. [5 sc]

With right side facing (RS), slip stitch loosely into each st and row end around the strap. Finish off and weave in ends.

Top

R1: With cream yarn and a 4 mm (G) crochet hook and right side facing (RS), join your yarn in the fifth stitch, just below head, with 1 sc. 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, turn. [5 sc]

R2-R20: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn. [5 sc]

R21: Ch 1, 1 hdc in each of the first 2 sts, ch 1, sk the next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, turn. [4 hdc, 1 ch1sp]

R22: Ch 1, 1 hdc in each of the first 2 sts, 1 hdc in the ch1sp, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, turn. [5 hdc]

Repeat R21 and R22 until you have 5 button holes. Turn and slip stitch into each st and row end around the strap. Finish off and weave in ends.

Sew 5 small buttons onto the bottom strap to correspond with the button holes on the top strap.

CHEEK

The cheeks are made in continuous rounds. A stitch marker should be used to mark the position of the first st of the round.

Make 2.

Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook, or size required for gauge:

Rnd 1: With brown yarn: Make 6 sc in a DMR. [6 sc]

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. [12 sc]

Rnd 3: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. [18 sc]

Rnd 4 -Rnd 5: 1 sc in each st around. [18 sc]

Sl st in the next sc to join. Finish off, leaving a tail of yarn for sewing the cheek to the head.

EYES

The eyes are made in continuous rounds. A stitch marker should be used to mark the position of the first st of the round.

Make 2.

Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook, or size required for gauge:

Rnd 1: With white yarn: Make 6 sc in a DMR. [6 sc]

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. [12 sc]

Rnd 3 – Rnd 4: 1 sc in each st around. [12 sc]

Sl st in the next sc to join. Finish off, leaving a tail of yarn for sewing the eye to the head.

Proceed to finishing instructions.

Finishing Instructions

  • Stuff the eyes and cheeks with a small amount of fiberfill stuffing.
  • Sew cheeks and eyes into position using the photos as a guide.
  • Embroider black French Knots onto the eyes for pupils and 3 whiskers onto each cheek. 
  • Add a small red button for the nose.
  • Weave in any remaining ends.
