Castle Afghan Crochet Pattern

This month, Carol Hegar from Shady Lane Original Crochet Designs has given me a copy of her Castle Afghan crochet pattern to review and a second copy to giveaway to one of my readers!

The entire pattern uses only single crochet stitches worked in the back loop of a stitch, and double crochet stitches worked in a remaining front loop of a stitch from 2 rows before. This technique is similar to a ldc — long double crochet — but it is worked in the remaining front loop, not around the post of the stitch.

The pattern is worked on the RS (right side) only, and you will finish off the strand of yarn you are working with at the end of every row. The project is designed to allow you to create a fringe on the left and right side edges of the blanket. You will not have any ends to sew in!

By watching Carol’s helpful step-by-step video tutorial you will be able to master the dropped double crochet technique easily.

This 11-page ePattern is written in U.S. Crochet Terms and uses only simple crochet stitches. Instructions on how to read the pattern and how to recognize the loops of the stitches are included on page 3. Row by row written instructions are included from page 4 to page 7 and the optional Afghan Graph (for those who prefer following graphs) is included from the bottom of page 7 to page 11.

Castle Afghan Crochet Pattern Sizes

Baby Size Castle Afghan

  • 32.5 inches X 38.5 inches
  • size 3.5 mm (E) crochet hook
  • 20 oz of baby yarn
  • gauge: 5 sts and 5 rows = 1 inch

Child Size Castle Afghan

  • 40.75 inches X 48 inches
  • size 4 mm (G) crochet hook
  • 46 oz of worsted weight yarn
  • gauge: 4 sts and 4 rows = 1 inch

To make a larger size afghan measuring 36 inches X 42.75 inches, use a 3.75 mm (F) crochet hook and baby weight yarn. Your gauge should be approximately 4.5 stitches and 4.5 rows per inch.

Make this charming fairytale afghan for the perfect gift for your little princess. And don’t forget your little prince – just omit the hearts for a bit more masculine look for him.
