Hi, it’s me again! Today I am releasing the second stash buster crochet pattern to use up the last of my Caron Swirl Cakes, Bulky Weight Yarn [5]. Today’s free stash-buster pattern is for my Bulky Ribbed Ear-Warmer.

This ribbed ear-warmer is wonderfully stretchy and perfect for protecting your ears from the cold winter wind. It’s also great for wearing when you have your hair up in a messy-bun, or pony-tail. My daughter loves ear-warmers because they help her stay warm here in Canada without messing up her long hair (like a hat does).

The runners and joggers around here love them too; they can keep their ears protected without covering their entire head. That way they won’t overheat!

I have designed this stash-buster pattern in 5-sizes and when you read the notes section below in my pattern it will explain how to make the crochet headband wider by increasing the number of starting chains.

As with my Reversible Bulky Ear Warmer Pattern, this free pattern uses some of my stashed yarn. You might remember this yarn from these projects: Here We Come Hat and my Here We Come Cowl.

You might have some of this Bulky Weight Yarn in your stash too. It’s Caron Swirl Cakes and the color is Gold Fusion (in case you were wondering!). The yarn is labelled as Bulky Weight [5] and contains 8 oz / 227 g and 252 yds /230 m. The recommended hook size is an 8 mm (L) and the yarn is 30% Wool and 70% Acrylic.

If you use Ravelry you can check out their stashed section to see if you can find some of this yarn (if you want the same color I used). Many Ravelry users like to swap or sell their stash yarn so it is a good place to start.

If you want to see if you have something in your yarn-stash that is similar, you can read my post here about How to Find a Good Yarn Substitution.

Quick Stitch Guide

Slip Knot and Starting Chain

Make it a Twisted Ear-Warmer (seaming technique)

Notes:

  • Multiple of 1 (plus 1 for the turning chain) (Understanding Stitch Multiples)
  • When I work into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. You can work under the back loop only if you prefer.
  • To add approximately one inch of height, increase the starting chain by 3.
  • To increase the width (circumference) repeat R2 as many, or as few, times as you wish. 5 rows will add approximately 1 inch. This headband stretches quite a bit so I have allowed between -4 and -5 inches of negative ease for the finished circumferences.
  • Make it a Twisted Ribbed Ear-Warmer by following this tutorial for seaming instead of the one at the end of the post!

Finishing Instructions for All Ear-warmer Sizes

You have 2 options. One you can seam this normally like the one in the photo (instructions are included below) OR you can make this a twisted headband and close it up like this.

Option 1: Finish off leaving a 6-inch tail of yarn for seaming.

On a flat surface, fold your project in half bringing the first and last rows together and lining up the stitches. Thread your yarn end on a yarn needle and work through both layers; whipstitch (view tutorial here) once for each stitch.

Once you have finished seaming the bulky ribbed ear-warmer, weave in any remaining ends securely.

Option 2: Twist Ear-Warmer Seaming Technique
