Bonny Hat Pattern

Here’s how it works.
My Bonny Hat Pattern is available in sizes toddler to adult large. This crocheted hat is made from the bottom-up, in one piece, with Chunky Weight Yarn [5]. The adult size beanie uses less than 1 ball of yarn and it was crocheted in less than 2 hours.
To make my Bonny Hat you will need Chunky Weight Yarn [5] and both a 5 mm (H) crochet hook (for the hat band/brim) and a 6 mm (J) crochet hook for the hat body.
My Bonny Hat Pattern is available in sizes Toddler, small child (3-5 years), child (6-10 years), teen/adult and adult (large).
I designed this hat to reach the base of your earlobe and to have a little bit of slouch. It is tapered to fit the shape of your head and if you’d like to make it more slouchy it is very easy to do! Just work the repeat section on extra time to increase the hat height by about one inch.

Disclaimer: The yarn used to create this project was given to me by King Cole.
The Yarn I used
For my Bonny Hat I used 3.3 oz (94 g) and 141 yds (130m) of Chunky Weight Yarn.
I loved working with the Chunky Tweed Yarn. It didn’t fluff, or pill as I worked and the colored flecks were well intigrated into the yarn. The yarn is warm and dense; perfect for fall and winter wearables. My stitch definition is looks good and the yarn compliments my stitches (it doesn’t overpower them) which to me is an added bonus because I wasn’t limited to the type of stitch I used for my project.
My finished hat is beautifully soft and warm and perfect for colder weather! I love the flecks of tweed that are sprinkled throughout the stitches. This yarn made a very pretty and durable crochet hat.
King Cole yarn is available from your local yarn shop, or online at the links in my post below.
Chunky Tweed Yarn is a blend of 72% Premium Acrylic, 25% Wool and 3% Viscose.
Chunky Tweed Yarn is available in a pretty range of colors with multi-colored flecks. Along with bright jewel tone shades, there are a few soft pastel color options too.

Finished Size
This hat is designed to reach the base of the earlobe and have a bit of slouch.
The circumference listed is the hat body size. The hat band will be shorter but it will stretch to the size needed for the circumference because it is worked in a rib stitch. *This hat will stretch 3-4 inches due to the bulky weight yarn and ribbed band.
- Toddler Hat (1-2 years) height 7 inches X 16 inches circumference
- Small Child Hat (3-5 years) height 7.75 inches X 18 inches circumference
- Child Hat (6-10 years) height 8.25 inches X 20 inches circumference
- Teen/Adult Hat height 9.5 inches X 20 inches circumference
- Adult Hat (Large) height 11 inches X 22 inches circumference
Gauge
- Hat Band: Approximately 8 sc in 2 inches and 14 rows per 4 inches
- Hat Body: Approximately *12 sts per 4 inches and 7 rows per 4 inches.
*12 sts = (1 sc, shell) 2 times; where each shell is 5 dc
You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

Helpful Tutorials
Notes:
- Stitch multiple of 6
- The initial ch 3 counts as 1 dc.
- The initial ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
- Shells are worked into the center of a single crochet. So instead of going under the top 2 loops, place your hook between the 2 legs of the stitch and under the loops.
- When we slip stitch to join, we make it into the center of the sc.
- We count the (Ch 3, 2 dc) from the beginning of a round, with the 2 dc at the end of the round as 1 shell, in the row end totals.
- In the final round, the initial ch 2 + dc4tog = dc5tog.
- To add approximately 1 extra inch of hat height, work the REPEAT ROUNDS one extra time.
