The pattern I designed for you to make requires 2 balls of Red Heart Hopscotch Yarn. I chose to make mine in the color Somersault. This is a medium weight [4] yarn which can be machine washed (warm) and tumbled dry (low). The yarn is lovely and soft and beautiful to work with.

Notes

  • the ch 1 and ch 2 do not count as stitches
  • the sl st to join does not count as a stitch
  • this project starts by working the band back and forth in rows with the smaller hook (5 mm hook)
  • the band is seamed at the end using a simple whipstitch
  • next we crochet across the one top edge of the band with the larger hook (5.5 mm hook) before joining into rounds
  • the rest of the hat body is crocheted with the 5.5 mm (I) hook
  • we turn at the end of every round after we join with a sl st
  • finish off using my simple hat closing technique here
  • For Adult Small: Hat Band: Start with a Ch 8 and continue until you have 58 rows. Hat Body: Beg by working 57 hdc evenly across. Follow the same written instructions (remembering that your stitch counts will be different at the end of the rounds). End your repeats of R2 and R3 after R9 and then follow the remaining instructions for the hat.

Beach Pebbles Hat Pattern Instructions

Hat Band

We begin by making the band. The band is worked back and forth in rows with the 5.00 mm (H) size crochet hook. You will use the 8-10 inch tail of yarn to seam your hat closed when you are finished crocheting the entire hat.

Gauge: approximately 14 rows = 4 inches
Band height: approximately 2.5 inches
Band length: approximately 18 inches

With your 5 mm (H) hook:

R1: Leave an 8-10 inch tail of yarn and ch 10, 1 sc in the bl of each ch across, ch 1, turn. [9]
R2-62: 1 sc in the bl of each of the next 8 sc, 1 sc in the last sc (both loops), ch 1, turn. [9]

You will now be working across the top long edge of the band using the 5.5 mm (I) hook.

Hat Body

With your 5.5 mm (I) hook:

R1: Work 63 hdc evenly across the top long edge of the band. Sl st to the first hdc to join, ch 2, turn. [63]

You will now be working in joined rounds. At the end of each round you will turn your work.

R2: RS. *1 pc, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts**. Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first pc to join, ch 1, turn. [21 pc, 42 hdc]

R3: 1 hdc in each st around. Ch 2, turn. [63]

R4-13: Rep R2 and R3

You will now be working the decrease rounds to shape the top of the hat.

R14: *1 pc, hdc2tog**. Rep from * to ** around, ch 1, turn. [21 pc, 21 hdc]

R15: 1 hdc in each st around. Ch 2, turn. [42]

R16: *1 pc, 1 hdc in the next st**. Rep from * to ** around ch 1, turn. [21 pc, 21 hdc]

R17: Hdc2tog around, ch 2, turn. [21]

R18: 1 pc in each st around, ch 1, turn. [21]

R19: 1 hdc in the first st. Hdc2tog around for the rem sts, ch 2, turn. [11]

R20: 1 pc in each st around.  Finish off leaving a 7 inch tail of yarn. Close the top of the hat using my simple closing technique for hats and mittens. [11]
